Tigers vs. Indians Pick MLB – July 5th

There isn’t much to say about yesterday, as my game didn’t even get to see one pitch due to a rainout. I suppose that still means I have only had one losing day in over a week, but I was eager to cash a winner yesterday. Weekends are typically when I cash in big, so I am looking for a repeat performance this holiday weekend.

Free MLB Pick:

Detroit Tigers +136 at Cleveland Indians -147 (Total: 8.5)

Rick Porcello (4-6, 5.21 ERA) vs. Justin Masterson (10-6, 3.48 ERA)

The Detroit Tigers are feeling sky high after taking three straight from the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto. They even did it yesterday without stud Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers received excellent production throughout the lineup and from the pitching staff. They now enter a pivotal series against the Cleveland Indians, a team in which they are going toe-to-toe with in the AL Central. Does anyone really believe the Indians are going to win this division? No. I don’t even think Indians’ fans think this, but now is the time for the Tigers to pull away and prove what they are worth. Nobody thought this division would even be this close, so they need to send a message to the rest of the league that they aren’t fooling around anymore.

They’ll try and extend their winning streak to five games against Justin Masterson. Masterson has been a rock for the Indians this season, posting a 3.48 ERA with a 2.29 at home. There aren’t many negatives to find with Masterson, but there are negatives to find with him against the Tigers. He has faced them on many occasions, so the Tigers are no strangers to his stuff. Also, Masterson got beat for 4 runs against them on June 9th , indicating that they have hit him before. Lastly, the Tigers have been known to get to right-handed pitching in the past, notching a .278 batting average against them.

Tigers’ Rick Porcello doesn’t have nearly as nice of a resume as Masterson in 2013. However, there was a stretch where Porcello was very impressive. He went five straight games only allowing 5 runs in total in the beginning of June. The only teams that have dinged him up recently have been the Angels and Orioles, two teams that can bash any pitcher up. He also got killed for 10 runs against the Angels much earlier in the season. So while his numbers don’t appear all that impressive, Porcello has been better than what his numbers indicate. He has gotten hammered against the best offenses in MLB, but has held others in check.

This number is looking too good for me to pass up on. Miguel Cabrera may sit this one out due to back pain, but I think the rest of the Tigers are eager to show that this isn’t the Detroit Cabrera’s. Beyond Cabrera they are stacked offensively, and I see this number being an overreaction to his injury. Take Miggy out of the Tigers lineup and I still see a team that is better than the Indians. If he does play, then even better. I believe the Indians should be more of a -120 favorite, so I will take a bite with the dog. You won’t get the Tigers at this price very often.
