We had a nice easy win last night with our MLB pick as the Diamondbacks and Dodgers went well over the seven run total runline. It runs our personal winning streak to five picks, and we will try to keep it going tonight as MLB action gets back into full 15-game a night action.
Five inter-league series kick off tonight, and none are better than the potential World Series matchup of the Tigers and Nationals. TO make things even more interesting, both starting pitchers have ERA’s under 2.00. The Mets also begin inter-league play hosting the White Sox. Normally this game wouldn’t pique my interest, but I am interested to see how Matt Harvey fares coming off his shortest outing of the season, a game in which he threw 121 pitches in 5 1/3 innings against the Marlins.
Let’s look at these two games in tonight’s free picks…
Detroit Tigers -110 at Washington Nationals -105 (Total: 7)
Anibel Sanchez (3-2, 1.82 ERA) vs. Jordan Zimmerman (5-1, 1.64 ERA)
Stephen Strasburg gets all the publicity. Gio Gonzalez is the returning Cy Young contender. But it’s been Jordan Zimmerman who has been the best pitcher in a Washington Nationals uniform this season. His 1.64 ERA has been dazzling but his 0.75 WHIP has been even better. He will have his work cut out for him tonight facing the Tigers potent offense and their 5.34 runs per game, but I’ll take the dominant pitcher facing a team who hasn’t seen him at home anytime.
Anibal Sanchez has been great as well – and perhaps it’s even more pleasant than Zimmerman because of the surprise. Like Zimmerman, he is not counted on to anchor a very good pitching staff, but Zimmerman was EXPECTED to be really good. The Tigers were more HOPING Sanchez could deliver these kind of numbers.
However, he will be no stranger to the Nationals hitters, having spent a long time in Marlins colors and facing the Nats 18 times a season. I’ll give Zimmerman the slight edge, and take the Nats at home at a nice value of -105.
Free Pick: Washington Nationals to WIN -105
Chicago White Sox +143 at New York Mets -152 (Total: 6.5)
Both teams enter this series not playing exemplary baseball. The Sox have dropped five of eight and and enter at 13-17 on the season. The Mets enter even colder, having lost seven of nine and are similarly four games under .500 (12-16) after a decent start. They will be sending the hope of their franchise, starting pitcher Matt Harvey, to the mound tonight in hopes of starting the series with a win.
Harvey has been fantastic this season, posting a 1.52 ERA and a WHIP second only to Jordan Zimmerman’s at 0.83. He’s been dominant all season long, and I expect him to bounce back from a subpar outing (though he only yielded one run in his 5 1/3 innings) against the Marlins.
Chicago will counter with Hector Santiago who enters with a very good 2.29 ERA, albeit in less innings (19.1) than Harvey. He has been very good, but hasn’t had a ton of offense to back him up.
The White Sox struggle to score and have a terrible OBP of just .286 as a team. Look for Harvey to exploit their erratic hitters who are more than a little strikeout prone. I like the Mets to win this game at Citi Field tonight with ease.
Free Picks: New York Mets to WIN -152 & New York Mets -1.5 (+150)
