Tigers vs Rangers Pick MLB – May 19th

A tough night for the MLB picks last night as both our picks, the Pirates and the Nationals, fell late (one in the tenth, the other in the 8th) and lost close games.  We will try to rebound tonight with just a single pick.  It’s a mostly afternoon affair today as are most Sundays, but you have plenty of time to get your picks in on this one (as well as decide if you agree or disagree) as we focus in on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball featured game between the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers.

Detroit Tigers +107 at Texas Rangers  -115 (Total: 9)

Doug Fister vs. Derrick Holland

The first game of this series failed to live up to the hype of the pitching matchup, with Justin Verlander getting absolutely shelled and even Yu Darvish not being at his sharpest en route to a 10-4 win.  Yesterday, the Rangers continued the offensive output in a 7-2 win.  Not surprisingly, the run lines have crept up and up as this series progressed (despite a 2-1 Tiger win Friday night), and tonight is as high as 9.5 on some books (just 9 at many others).

There is no question that Fister and Holland will have their work cut out for them tonight, as both of these lineups are among the most potent in all of baseball.  The Tigers are hitting .278 as a team, the best in baseball, while the Rangers are right behind them in the American League at .269.  The Tigers are slightly lower against left handed pitching (Holland is a southpaw) at ‘just’ .266.  Perhaps he will be able to better control some of the Tiger bats – his team has done a good job of it so far this series, allowing only eight runs in three games.

Both Holland and Fister have been sharp this season, both have ERA’s right around 3, and WHIP’s of 1.18 and 1.07 respectively.  However, they are going to face real challenges tonight against the best lineups they will face all season long.

I like the Tiger bats to wake up tonight.  It’s been a quiet series for them, and I don’t think it can continue much longer.  Likewise, I think Fister will give them the big start they need.  He is 5-1 on the season with an ERA of under three.  Verlander gets the headlines, but Fister has been a big-time All-Star caliber pitcher all season long.  Especially considering I can get Fister at plus-money, I like the value of the Tigers tonight.
