The Detroit Tigers are trying to get this thing turned around, and over the weekend, they were able to get on track momentarily. They walked the Blue Jays off thanks to a Miguel Cabrera walk in the bottom of the 11th. A-Rod started swirling a rumor around that Cabrera may be on the trading block in a blockbuster trade.
The news of Michael Fulmer getting dealt is real, but wouldn’t it be something of the Tigers dish out both of these guys. While the rumors are more legitimate surrounding the Fulmer trade, I think the Tigers may be best served to part with Cabrera instead. Cabrera isn’t getting any younger, and the Tigers are not going to win anything regardless if he’s in Detroit or not for the next few years.
Additionally, the Tigers have to dump some money here. Their payroll is loaded. Nobody is going to take Victor Martinez’s contact, Jordan Zimmermann, or Anibal Sanchez. One guy who could be attractive to other teams, say the Red Sox, is Cabrera.
But make no doubt about it, Miggy is on the downswing of his career. If the Tigers were offered a slew of young talented prospects for him, they’d be stupid to pass it up. I’d be surprised if any team is going to go all-in on a 34-year-old expensive bat who has a history of recent injuries.
Verlander, too, would make sense to dump if the offer is reasonable enough. Undoubtedly, Fulmer is the more sought-after guy on this roster. He’s talented, and would provide talent for the foreseeable future. For the Tigers to give him up, though, it’s going to have to take a lot to convince them.
The Tigers will face the Royals this evening, who are quietly rising in the American League Central. They’re 45-45 and just 2 games back of the Indians. This is all after going 1-5 in their last six games, which tells you how bad the AL Central has been thus far in 2017. Tigers’ bust, Jordan Zimmermann, will take on Jason Vargas to get the week started. For our free Tigers vs. Royals pick head below.
Detroit Tigers vs. K.C. Royals Pick
Jordan Zimmermann (5-7, 5.87 ERA) vs. Jason Vargas (2.62 ERA)
Zimmermann has essentially been a money pit for the Tigers. There’s a few contracts on the roster who are burning a hole in their wallet, but Zimmermann may be the most disappointing. He was expected to replace be a suitable replacement for Max Scherzer, but it’s been nothing more than snake eyes for the Tigers. In his first year in Detroit, Zimmermann posted a 4.87 ERA, and he currently holds a 5.87 ERA in 2017. That is not $100 million numbers. It’s a dumpster fire with $100 million inside of it burning.
Zimmermann has yet to win a game on the road, 0-4, along with a 6.99 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. He’s trending down as well, with a 9.95 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in his last three outings. The Tigers can hit left-handed pitching, though. In their last ten games they hit .322 and .308 in their last five games. Vargas has been a rock for the Royals this year, posting a 2.62 ERA overall but a 4.26 in his last three. The Tigers know how to hit Vargas as well with a team BA of .297 against him. In total, he’s allowed 9 dingers against this lineup. Other than Castellanos, everyone else has had no problems hitting Vargas. The OVER looks like an attractive pick in this spot on Monday night.
