We cashed a third straight winner last night with the Cubs and Reds easily eclipsing the eight run total, more than doubling it, and chasing both starting pitchers early enough to have a winner in the bag with innings and innings to spare. More importantly for the Cubs, they took their fifth loss in six games and lost on a night where the Giants loss a 14-inning heartbreaker so they failed to pick up a much needed game of breathing room in their pursuit to hold on to the final wildcard. At this point the Cardinals and likely the Pirates as well as too far ahead in the Central to catch, so the fate of this young ballclub will be in desperately trying to hold off the defending World Series champs… Expect it to be a tense and exciting final month of the season.
It’s been a pretty good summer for me and the picks. We are on a three-game streak and 14 of our last 20, including a more than a few plus-money winners. Let’s see if we can keep it rolling tonight.

Today’s Free Pick:
Detroit Tigers +154 at Kansas City Royals -164 (Total: 7)
Justin Verlander vs. Johnny Cueto
Tonight has the potential to be a fantastic pitcher’s duel, despite a pair of capable offensive lineups. Justin Verlander, as I’ve written a few times recently, appears to be back. He has a 0.39 ERA over his last three starts and has been dominant in the process. He has struck out 24 batters to just 5 walks en route to a 0.59 WHIP. Cueto has been good as well. Aside from one bad start, he has only allowed more than three runs once all season long. He has struck out 15 batters and walked only one in his last three starts.
Detroit hasn’t finished below Kansas City in the standings since 2008, but enter tonight a whopping 20 games behind the Royals who have all but wrapped up the Central division. However, given the last three weeks, you’d have to give a slight edge to Detroit.
Cueto hasn’t lost three straight starts since 2012. Let that sink in. He hasn’t lost three games in a row since 2012 and he is now pitching for the best team in his career. It’s hard to see him staggering again tonight. But it is also hard to see Verlander not pitching well given the run he is currently on.
It all adds up to a nice, tight low-scoring affair in Kansas City. I’ll bank on both pitchers tonight and take the UNDER 7. There is some nice value in Detroit at +154 with Verlander on the mound, but I’ll take the total as it wouldn’t surprise me if Verlander pitches well but end up with a ND.
