We got back on track yesterday, riding the red-hot Pirates in their 3-2 win over the White Sox to complete a four game home and home sweep over the Sox and finishing the series with just four runs allowed. The Buccos have now won nine straight and look like the best pitching staff in the National League led by ace Gerrit Cole.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals lost a second straight game since the scandalous probe began. So perhaps cheaters do in fact never win… Oh, and A-Rod is one hit away from 3,000….
Let’s move on to today’s free pick and see if we can amass a nice little weekend win streak.

Today’s Free Pick:
Detroit Tigers +107 at New York Yankees -117 (Total: 8)
Justin Verlander (0-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. Adam Warren (4-4, 3.78 ERA)
The Tigers got washed out last night in Cincinnati, so Justin Verlander got another rest day getting bumped back to tonight for his second start of the season. Yankee Stadium shouldn’t be unfamiliar to him, though he did make only one start against the Yankees last season and gave up a pair of solo shots.
He has had some struggles against A-Rod, who is 10-28 in his career against Verlander and allowed four four home runs. So the numbers say it is quite likely A-Rod gets his 3,000th hit tonight in front of the home fans. The better wager would be “will anyone care?” That’s a topic for another day. For now, I am more concerned with Verlander keeping him in the yard.
Adam Warren has done a good job for the Yankees, who enter tonight at 36-30 despite lacking nearly all of the star power they’ve been known for over the years. They don’t have a single sure-fire All-Star positional player aside from Jacoby Ellsbury (Texieria should make it as well), but the largely nameless pitching staff has made up for the fact that big-name CC Sabathia is simply that is this point; a big name. Adam Warren has done a nice job. Nothing spectacular, but he gives his team a chance to win most nights, and he has been eveb better at home, positng a 2-1 record with a 2.20 ERA.
I think both pitchers will have a decent night tonight. I like Verlander to show some flashes of being back, and it is hard to argue with Warren’s home numbers this season. The Tigers FEEL like a fearsome offensive team because of past performance, but this year they are more pedestrian, averaging jus 4.23 runs per game (actually 0.31 less than the Yankees)
I’m willing to bet on both starters doing a good job tonight and keeping the score relatively low.
