The Seattle Mariners are starting to look like the team we expected them to be. Last season the Mariners had high expectations, acquiring some hefty talent to insert in the offense. None bigger than Robinson Cano. Cano was hampered by medical problems a year ago and took a lot of heat regarding his poor play. This season the Mariners are 28-18 so all is better in Seattle. Also Cano has been the MVP of the Mariners’ season. He is also on pace to shatter his career highs. After all of the success he had with the Yankees, and how he fell back in 2015, it is opening some eyes up. Cano has already belted 14 home runs and we aren’t even out of May yet. It’s clear that he is on a mission in 2016.
The Mariners have won six of their last games and are looking better than ever. They hope to keep this going and go all the way to the postseason. Right now it looks like the Mariners are positioned to do just that and perhaps do some damage. If there is one player on this team who deserves it it’s Felix Hernandez. He has pitched so brilliantly over the past several seasons, yet the rest of the organization has failed him. They never looked to beef up their offense since they finally did with Cano. They were gun shy to pull the trigger on signing a big bat and finally did with Cano. Seattle also traded for Austin Jackson, which came up snake eyes for the Mariners. Nevertheless, the move was made to address a need, but Jackson just couldn’t duplicate what he did in Detroit with the Mariners. Wade Miley will get the nod for the Mariners today, who has been a servicable option for the Mariners in the rotation. I don’t think you can expect too much from him, so you cannot knock what he has done thus far. It could better, but you’re not going to find a 3.00 ERA kind of guy from him. Miley will be taking on the veteran Phil Hughes tonight in Seattle. The Twins hope to find some confidence in Seattle. A strong series for them against a good team would do wonders for their confidence. Find my pick below for Saturday night on the diamond.
Minnesota Twins vs. Seattle Mariners Pick
Phil Hughes (1-7, 5.55 ERA) vs. Wade Miley (5-2, 4.50 ERA)
Hughes and Miley isn’t a matchup of dreams and is not going to garner much attention out of Minnesota and Seattle. Well, if you’re betting on the game you’ll be interested. The Twins and Mariners are teams going in opposite directions, with the Twins going 2-8 in their last ten games and the Mariners 6-1 in their last seven games. Miley has been pitching well, but hasn’t been able to keep the ball down. Note that he owns a WHIP of just 1.23, yet has a 4.50 ERA.
The good news for Miley and the Mariners is that the Twins have difficulties going deep. The Twins inability to hit dingers should of course favor the Mariners tonight. Hughes should get roughed up against a Mariners team that has scored five or more runs in six of their last ten games. I usually don’t pay prices of -150 but I still will if I think there is still some value to be had. I believe that the Mariners should be attracting a price of -170 this evening. So, I’m going to make the most of it and play the Mariners against the Twins.
PICK: MARINERS TO WIN -150
