Twins vs. Royals MLB Pick – September 7th

It isn’t the biggest night on the diamond, as there are only a handful of games on the schedule. Eyes will be on the NFL tonight, with the season getting underway between the Chiefs and Patriots. If you want that pick, be sure to check it out on the blog. While the NFL is just getting going, the MLB regular season is just a few weeks away from wrapping up.

Postseason baseball is great, so I’m not exactly too upset to see the regular season ending soon. For teams who are in the postseason race, the next few weeks may feel like forever. The entire season is condensed in September with every game meaning something. It’s especially important for the Twins and Royals.

The Twins would absolutely love it if the season were to end right now. They’re 0.5 games up for the final wildcard, and it feels like they’ve been spending the last month hanging on to this spot. There’s a feverous bunch of teams behind them trying to take it over. One of those teams being the Kansas City Royals. The Royals and Twins are watching the Indians run away with the division and not looking back. However, the door is still open to get in the play-in game.

For the Twins, there weren’t too many people you could find who had them playing in the postseason. They’ve spent a while in the basement of the AL Central, and they’re having a minor coming out party in 2017. With the Tigers heading to the bottom of the division, and the White Sox still trying to sort things out, I don’t think we’ll see the Twins at the bottom for a while now.

Meanwhile, the Royals are just two years removed from winning the World Series. It’s still fresh on the minds of Royal fans, who will have a ball in the lottery if they can come behind by 1.5 games over the next few weeks. There isn’t a lot of action tonight, but this is a must-watch matchup. Head below for our Twins vs. Royals pick.

Minnesota Twins vs. K.C. Royals Pick

Kyle Gibson (9-10, 5.33 ERA) vs. Sam Gaviglio (3-5, 4.62 ERA)

The Twins and Royals both came out on top in convincing ways yesterday. The Royals blew the nosediving Tigers out of the water by a score of 13-2. The Tigers are just there as a punching bag for others at this point. Meanwhile, the Twins took care of the Marlins easily, 8-1. It’s what both teams needed, but the Royals would have liked to see the Tigers help them out. Now with the Twins in front of them, though, they can do some catching up. Minnesota sends Kyle Gibson to the hill this evening. Gibson has been exceeding expectations lately, as he comes in with a 1.37 ERA in his last three starts.

I wouldn’t say that’s indicative of his talent, though. On the year Gibson holds a 5.33 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. So, even with a nice stat-line like that lately, he still has a bad ERA. One of those quality starts came against the Royals, where he blanked them across 6 innings. I don’t see that happening twice in a row. Conversely, rookie Sam Gaviglio has been getting bombed lately, with a 7.94 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with a .392 OBA. The wind is supposed to be blowing out this evening in Kansas City. The offenses were on fire yesterday, and I expect it to continue against Gibson and Gaviglio on Thursday night.

PICK: OVER 9.5 (-110)
