The Washington Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks are at Chase Field for the second of third game in the desert. The Diamondbacks are coming off an impressive performance in a 10-1 win last night. There were no blemishes in that one for the Diamondbacks.

Zac Gallen pitched a gem, with 2 hits and no runs allowed through 7 innings of work. The offense helped Gallen out as well. They notched 8 hits and 5 earned runs in 5 innings against Patrick Corbin. The bullpen allowed 3 more runs in the 9-run game.
Arizona is 41-52 and 21.5 games behind the Dodgers. While things don’t look so great when they’re in last place, this is the same team that won only 52 games a season ago. The Diamondbacks are getting closer to reaching that mark well before the end of the regular season.
Following the loss last night, the Nationals fell to 31-64 on the season. They’re 27.5 games behind the New York Mets. It’s all about the Mets and Braves in the NL East.
The Mets and Braves should get into an entertaining finish in the regular season for the NL East title. However, the Nationals are well removed from the race and only a shell of the team that won the World Series in 2019.
Veteran Anibal Sanchez is scheduled to have the start for the Nationals on the bump tonight. He will be joined by Madison Bumgarner on the other side for the Diamondbacks.

Nationals vs. Diamondbacks Prediction:
The Nationals are looking for a strong outing from Anibal Sanchez after he struggled in his first start of 2022. Sanchez was pushed around against the Braves through 5 innings of work. He left the game with 4 hits and 4 earned runs allowed.
Tough opener for Sanchez, but it’s hard to expect a lot from him at this stage in his career. Sanchez made his first pitch on a major league mound since 2020 in that start.
Sanchez was able to jumpstart his career with the Braves in 2018 and then followed up with some decent work in Washington. He appears to be regressing back to his frustrating years in the majors.
The Nationals can’t look to the bullpen for help because they’ve been shabby in 2022. They are towards the back of the majors with a 4.39 ERA and 1.34 WHIP.

- OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games versus a team with a winning percentage worse than 40%
Madison Bumgarner should have the clear advantage over Sanchez in this start. Bumgarner isn’t quite the ace he was with the Giants, but is doing well enough in his third year in the desert.
He’s been efficient at home, with an ERA of 3.15 and a 1.33 WHIP at Chase Field. It’s on the road where Bumgarner loses some consistency.
It’s hard to have much confidence in Sanchez at Chase Field tonight. Look at the Diamondbacks to follow up a three-game losing streak with back-to-back wins over the Nats.
