Washington Nationals vs. Milwaukee Brewers Pick – MLB May 22, 2022

This afternoon, the Milwaukee Brewers will look for a three-game sweep over the Washington Nationals at American Family Field. After a 7-0 and 5-1 win, the Brewers have been in full control of this series.

Brandon Woodruff pitched a solid game in the most recent win on Saturday. Woodruff went 6 innings with 5 hits and 1 earned run allowed. He had the better arm over Patrick Corbin, who conceded 8 hits and 5 earned runs through 5 innings of work.

Milwaukee is leading the NL Central with a record of 26-14. They have a four-game advantage on the St. Louis Cardinals for first in the division.

They’re in good form, with wins in five of their previous six outings. The Brewers aren’t only beating up on a bad Nationals team. During this solid stretch of wins, the Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves in two of three games.

That’s a good series for the Brewers, and there hasn’t been any letdown versus the Nationals. Everything has been working, as the offense is finding runs, and the pitching is in lockdown mode going into the series finale.

The Brewers are one of the most well-balanced teams in the major leagues. They can win with their arms or bats.

The Nationals aren’t looking for too much this season, but progress from a 65-97 campaign in 2021 would be a win. They finished last and 23.5 games behind the Braves for the lead in the division.

The Nats are looking for better from Aaron Sanchez on the mound this afternoon. The former Blue Jay has not been been holding well through 23 innings.

Sanchez needs a bounce back, while the Brewers’ Freddy Peralta has to keep on after a fiery start against the Braves in a 1-0 win. He’s had one troublespot this season, but great otherwise.

Nationals vs. Brewers Prediction:

Aaron Sanchez is in desperate need of a strong performance soon, or he’s going to be in danger of getting demoted. The Nationals aren’t expecting to be a contender this season, but they also can’t trot out Sanchez to get mauled every five or six days.

Sanchez is going into Sunday afternoon with a shaky ERA of 7.94 and a 1.68 WHIP across 23 innings of work. He’s coming off another poor performance six days ago versus the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins made easy work of Sanchez, as they got to him for 8 hits and 4 earned runs in 3.2 innings. It’s the third time in five outings that Sanchez has allowed at least 4 earned runs in a performance.

Sanchez has been thrown across the coals in his previous three starts for an 8.78 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in 14 innings. That’s consistent with what he’s done on the road as well.

Sanchez has posted an ERA of 9.00 and a 1.92 WHIP in 13 innings on the road.

The Brewers are swinging the bats well, especially recently; they’ve scored 19 runs in their last three outings. Going into Sunday, Milwaukee is sixth in the majors with 4.87 runs per 9 innings.

They rank third in the major leagues with 1.36 home runs per game and a top OPS of .731. Look for Sanchez to once again run into problems.

Washington Nationals vs. Milwaukee Brewers Betting Trends:

Nationals

  • Record (Last 10): 3-7
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games as an underdog on the road
  • 0-4 overall in their previous four games versus the NL Central
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games after losing the first two games of a series
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games on a Sunday
  • 0-4 overall in their previous four games versus the Brewers

Brewers

  • Record (Last 10): 7-3
  • 5-1 overall in their previous six games versus the NL East
  • 14-2 overall in their previous 16 games at home versus a right-handed starter
  • 18-6 overall in their previous 24 games as a betting favorite
  • 20-8 overall in their previous 28 games on a Sunday
  • OVER is 4-0-1 in their previous five second game of a series

  • The Nats should have a tough time solving Freddy Peralta. One of the more underrated pitchers in baseball, Peralta is coming off a career-high season in 2021.

Peralta finished with an ERA of 2.81 and a 0.97 WHIP in 28 games. He allowed 6 earned runs in his second start of this season, but is back on track and coming off his best attempt last week.

Peralta held the Braves to 2 hits and no runs through 7 innings.

He also struck out 10 and walked one batter. Since allowing 6 earned runs, Peralta has allowed 1 or no earned runs in four of five starts.

Finding consistent offense has been a recurring problem for the Nationals in 2022. Note that the Nats are jutting just .191 against Peralta in 34 at-bats. They are 28th in the majors with 0.68 home runs per game.

If the Brewers are motivated to complete the sweep on Sunday, they should have a good chance at getting it done this afternoon. Sanchez has lost all command and has little velocity on his pitches.

Milwaukee by at least 2 runs on the runline looks like a fair bet at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
