The New York Mets return home following a frustrating series against the Cubs in Chicago at Wrigley Field. The Cubs delivered a sweeping victory, as they completed three straight wins against the Mets on Thursday night. After the Mets got nothing with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th and 1 out, the Cubs scored the winning run shortly thereafter in the bottom half of the frame.
Hitting into a double play with 1 out on the board in extra innings isn’t advised, but it was that kind of series for the Mets. They fell to 7-7 on the season with the loss. From 7-4 to 7-7 in quick order for the Mets, who were leading the NL East then. The Mets head into the weekend tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for top honors in the division. All five teams in the NL East are within a game of one another.
The Nationals, Marlins, and Braves are all a game behind the Mets and Phillies. Atlanta are still the favorites in the NL East, but I think you can flip a coin on this division. It’s wide open for business, and if I had to select a team, it’s hard to pass up on the Braves. Some people are high on the Mets, but I ran out of fingers counting how many times this team was hyped up to do something and they disappointed.
The series against the Cubs was a perfect encapsulation of the Mets over the last decade. They had their chances to breakthrough, but came up short time after time. Failing to come up with a clutch hit pretty well sums up the Mets. That was on display against the Cubs last night. It wasn’t the most difficult pitching matchup, but the Mets couldn’t figure out Trevor Williams and the Cubs’ bullpen.
Jacob deGrom knows all about this team failing to come up with a clutch hit. The offense has let him down regularly. It’s not unfamiliar for deGrom to go deep into a game with no runs allowed and the Mets still lose. He gets the Washington Nationals on Friday night to open this three-game series at Citi Field. The Nationals are coming off two solid games with a 3-2 and 1-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Max Scherzer conceded 4 hits and no earned runs through 6 innings Erick Fedde will follow up for the Nationals on Friday. Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets MLB Betting Odds:
Nationals vs. Mets Prediction:
This could be another season where Jacob deGrom’s talent goes to waste on the Mets. Before the Mets step up and provide him and the rest of this pitching staff with some run support, nothing is going to change in Queens. All deGrom can do is worry about himself and not concern himself with the offense. It reminds me of Felix Hernandez in Seattle. Hernandez spent his career dishing out productive start after productive start for the Mariners, but he didn’t have anything to show for it, at least as far as team success is concerned.
DeGrom is off to a fast start this season, as he has been taking care of his responsibilities. Through three appearances, deGrom has been on fire with an ERA of 0.45 and 0.70 WHIP against the Marlins, Phillies, and Rockies. In his most recent showing, deGrom held down the Rockies for 3 hits and no earned runs in 6 innings.
Opponents are hitting just .162 against deGrom this season. This carries over from the last three years, where deGrom has recorded an ERA of 1.70, 2.43, and 2.38. His worst season was in 2017 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. There are a lot of pitchers who would be thrilled to have an ERA of 3.53 as a career-high.
Not deGrom that looks like he’s ready for another season with an ERA below 3.00. There’s one big bat on the Nationals that deGrom won’t have to worry about tonight. Juan Soto has been placed on the IL with a shoulder injury. That hurts an offense that has scored just 3.64 runs per 9 innings. The Mets haven’t been in good form offensively, but could strike against Erick Fedde, who has been struggling to find good form.
Fedde has been shaky with a 5.56 ERA and 1.68 WHIP through three starts. Speaking of pitchers that would be content with an ERA of 3.53. In five years in the majors, Fedde has failed to record an ERA below 4.00. He owns a 5.13 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in his career. After a rough series in Chicago, expect deGrom to get the Mets back on track at Citi Field. They should be able to record a 5-2 or 5-3 win on Friday night.
