Chicago White Sox +130 at Detriot Tigers -138 (Total: 8)
Jake Peavy at Doug Fister
It has been assumed all season long that sooner or later the Tigers would “snap out of it”, kick it into gear and take over the American League Central.
If it’s ever going to happen, it better start tonight.
Entering this pivotal weekend series the ChiSox own a three game lead over Detroit. If they were able to win the series, they would take firm control of the division. However, Detroit swept them in three straight games last time they met, and know that this time around the stakes are even higher. So who has the edge in tonight’s contest? Let’s dig into the numbers and take a look at the best wagering opportunity.
Chicago sends veteran pitcher Jake Peavy to the mound; a big game pitcher by makeup pitching in what might be the biggest game of the season to date. Peavy has had a nice bounce back year after losing much of the last three seasons to injury after being one of the top pitchers in baseball from 2006-2009. He is just 9-9 on the season, but his 3.04 ERA, especially in the American League, is excellent. His 1.08 WHIP is absolutely lights-out.
So it goes with Peavy this season, the numbers just don’t tell the whole story. For example, in his four starts against Detroit this season he is just 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA. However, nearly anyone who has seen him pitch in those games; manager, broadcasters, writers, will tell you – he pitched pretty well and looked good.
Doug Fister has become a bit of the X-Factor for the Tigers. Expected to be the solid number two behind Verlander, it has been a mixed bag with Fister all season. He owns a losing record (7-8) and his ERA is good, not great, at 3.67. In his last three outings he has allowed nine earned runs in just 18 innings of work. They will need a good start out of him tonight if they are going to take Chicago and Peavy.
Both teams enter this series reeling a bit. Chicago lost three of four to the inexplicably still-contending Orioles, while the Tigers took a disastrous three game sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals. Looking at lineups, momentum, pitching; everything – this game looks like a real toss-up. Because of that, I LOVE this game… not because the White Sox have a clear edge, but in a game this statistically even, I like getting Peavy at +130. It’s the very definition of a good value line.
