Here’s how you know when things are just not going your way. The Mets led 2-1 going into the 9th, only to give up the tying run and go to extra innings. The score in the Top of the 15th to take the lead, only to give up two runs in the Bottom of the 15th and lose 4-3 to the hapless Miami Marlins. It’s been that kind of week for me at the sportsgeek.com with MLB picks the last six days. We did salvage the evening with a nine-un total in the Cleveland game, but still another disappointing night.
It’s a long season; the first two weeks, no pick could miss. The last week, no pick could hit. There will plenty of weeks with a more mixed bag of results as well. Tonight, let’s get back on the winning track with a pair of positive pitching matchups and generous lines.
Chicago White Sox +181 at Texas Rangers -191 (Total: 7.5)
Jose Quintana (2-0, 2.78 ERA) vs. Yu Darvish (4-1, 1.65 ERA)
Yu Darvish started off the year in spectacular fashion, taking a perfect game into the bottom of the ninth on the second night of the season, and though not much can equal THAT, he has been amazing all season long. He is bringing an 18 consecutive scoreless innings streak into tonight’s game, and tonight he should flourish against a free-swinging Sox lineup.
Jose Quintana has been pitching well also, though much more under the radar than Darvish. He actually has better number over his last three starts (2-0, 0.98 ERA, 0.75 WHIP) than Darvish (2-1, 1.42 ERA, 0.79 WHIP). That makes tonight’s line a decent roll of the dice at +181.
Chicago has actually fared well against Texas, winning five of their last six meetings, including a 9-5 win last season in the game Darvish started. I’ll roll the dice with them tonight on the huge moneyline.
Free Pick: Chicago White Sox to WIN +181
Tampa Bay Rays +115 at Kansas City Royals -123 (Total: 7.5)
Alex Cobb (3-1, 1.82 ERA) vs. James Shields (1-2, 3.09 ERA)
The Royals have been one of the more pleasant surprises this April, entering tonight they are in first place in the AL Central at 13-10, and have gotten good offensive production from the young lineup. They are 5th in the AL in team batting at .260, and though they are middle of the pack in runs scored, with some of their pitching upgrades in the offseason, it has been enough to win baseball games.
Their most significant pitching upgrade takes the mound tonight to face his long-time former mates in ace James Shields. He’s earned the moniker “Big Game James” for his ability to rise to the occasion in important outings, and you can imagine his adrenaline will be pumping tonight to go out and beat the Rays.
Alex Cobb has been fantastic for the Rays, which has helped ease the pain from the loss of Shields. I expect both to pitch well tonight, but I’ll give Shields the focus and emotional edge tonight, and I expect his teammates to back him up. I like KC to win a low-scoring affair tonight.
Free Pick: Kansas City Royals to WIN -121 & Run TOTAL UNDER 7.5
