OUR PICK
YANKS -1.5
The New York Yankees will look to continue their torrid pace following a hard-fought series against the Houston Astros. The Yanks enter the weekend by far the best team in baseball, and will be seeking once again to prove just that against a pesky Cleveland squad.
The Guardians could very well be a potential playoff opponent for New York, so you better believe both teams will be looking to make an impact. Cleveland continues to battle for a wild-card spot, and a big series this weekend could go a long way for their playoff positioning.
Easier said than done though against the 56-21 Yankees, who are eight games better than any other team in all of baseball. New York has dominated on the road all season long, and with the ace of their staff, Gerrit Cole, on the mound Friday evening, manager Aaron Boone has to feel good about getting this series off to a good start.

The Guardians will counter with struggling righty Aaron Civale, who is somehow going to have to stifle the Yankees’ elite offense, despite entering with a 7.20 ERA. Despite having a nice start to his career, Civale has faded badly in 2022, and holds a worse home ERA than road – a bad omen for Friday evening vs. New York.
Tonight’s pitching matchup here in Cleveland is a rematch of the #Yankees‘ 10-2 win on April 24. Gerrit Cole pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, while Aaron Civale allowed six runs in three innings.

PITCHING PROBABLES: Yankees: Gerrit Cole (6-2, 2.99 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 111 strikeouts); Guardians: Aaron Civale (2-4, 7.20 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 39 strikeouts)
Cleveland secured a thrilling comeback victory over the Twin yesterday, but have cooled down considerably following a recent stretch where they won 17 of 21 contests. The Guardians are still in the thick of a competitive AL Wild-Card race, but know that they’ll need both better pitching and hitting to hang with the Yanks on Friday night.
With two winning squads and playoff implications already on the line here in July, this should make for an exciting game amid a loaded Friday slate of MLB action. Can the Guardians continue an unlikely push up the standings? Or will the visiting Yankees and Gerrit Cole prolong their dominant stretch? New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians Prediction:
The Yankees’ Gerrit Cole enters Friday night’s showdown in elite form, and should continue his dominant pace against a Cleveland offense that is struggling at the moment. Cole has been consistent again in 2022, securing a sub-3.00 ERA, and he’s been especially solid of late.
Cole has allowed just two runs in his past 21 innings, and has struck out an impressive 27 batters over that same stretch. The Cleveland offense has faltered of late, and beyond Jose Ramirez – the Guardians aren’t offering many other ways for them to manufacture runs.
Biggest drops in Barrel rate (/BIP), June compared to April.

2) José Ramirez
3) Max Kepler
4) Patrick Wisdom
5) Christian Yelich (-9.2%)
6) Cedric Mullins
7) Josh Donaldson

Expect the Yankees to offer up plenty of support for their ace in Cole, through some hot hitting of their own. While New York has not exactly hit for average this year, they’ve definitely hit for power. The trio of Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton is basically nightmare fuel for pitchers, and going against Civale should be a welcome feast for this talented threesome. Civale has struggled with giving up hard and long contact, and the Yanks do just that. Cleveland’s field is also favourable to left-handed batters, and New York could offer up plenty of that in Friday evening’s lineup.
Back in April, the Yankees obliterated Civale and jumped on him for six routine runs. This time around should be no different, as New York’s lineup crushes righties to the tune of a .427 OPS, and sit top-five in many other key offensive metrics. With Civale being prone to conceding the home-run, look for the Yankees to get back on track in a big way on Friday night.

Yankees vs. Guardians Trends To Know:
- Yankees are 7-1 in their last 8 Friday games.
- Yankees are 14-3 in their last 17 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
- Yankees are 22-7 in their last 29 games following a loss.
- Guardians are 2-5 in their last 7 home games.
- Guardians are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. American League East.
- Under is 5-1-1 in Yankees last 7 overall.
- Yankees are 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.
- Yankees are 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Cleveland.
After a tough series in Houston, the Yankees will have some frustration as they enter Cleveland, and Aaron Civale is the unfortunate pitcher standing in their way. The Yanks have done well to bounce back off losses all season long, and Gerrit Cole should have an easy outing against this pedestrian Cleveland offense. Back the Yankees -1.5 in what could be a rout come Friday night.
