The Subway Series continues on Saturday at Citi Field after the Yankees took the first game on Friday night, 4-1. It’s been a tough stretch for the Mets, as their losing streak has continued, ballooning to even games following the loss last night. And with that, they’ve slipped to 27-33. In a minute you can go from looking like a division buster, to falling out of the picture.
In 162 games, a lot can change, there are major ups and downs, but at the end of all this the Mets are not going to be much of anything. Not only do they have to deal with the Washington Nationals, the Braves and Phillies are eclipsing them. The offense has been horrifically bad of late, with no end in sight for the poor play at the plate.
The Mets have been known as a little brother to the Yankees in the past, but in 2015 that couldn’t have been further from the truth. The Mets went all of the way to the World Series, as they rode Matt Harvey’s arm all the way there. Harvey went off the rocks after that point, and the Mets haven’t been able to recapture the glory of 2015.
The Royals came out as the victors in five games over the Mets that year. Harvey did not have the same velocity on his ball after then. He was just moved, after refusing to go to the bullpen, where he has continued to struggle. With an attitude like that, I don’t know why. The Yankees will seek their ninth win in the last ten games, while the Mets just want to stop the bleeding. Head below for our free Yankees vs. Mets pick.
N.Y. Yankees vs. N.Y. Mets Pick
Domingo German (0-4, 5.44 ERA) vs. Steven Matz (2-4, 3.42 ERA)
Starting pitching is not the problem for the Mets. They have a rotation that a lot of teams would love to have. Matz could help a lot of teams who need a boost in the pitching department. Unfortunately for the Mets, they couldn’t hit a softball at the plate recently. They’ve managed to score 1 or 0 runs in six of their last seven games. During that stretch, the Mets have averaged 1.2 runs per game. In their last three games, that number is 0.67 runs per game. The Mets are 28th in the majors with just 3.87 runs scored per game. They take on a Yankee team who are 1st with 5.61 runs per game.
Matz has been pitching well this season, and has been looking good most recently. He enters with a 1.12 ERA in his last three tilts. However, it isn’t good news to see the Yankees on the schedule. The Yanks are hitting Matz for a .325 batting average in 40 at-bats. Conversely, German has gotten shellacked for a 7.31 ERA in his last three starts.
He must hold the Mets down today or he’s going to be finding himself back in the bullpen or to the minors. Despite German struggling, the Mets’ offense has zero confidence right now. I find it difficult to back a team who has scored more than 1 run just once in the last seven games. German should be able to develop some confidence after looking decent against this Mets lineup. I recommended riding with the Yankees to get the job done against on Saturday at Citi Field.
