The New York Yankees put on a nice display Sunday, as they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by a comfortable margin of 13-5. The Yankees rode a 7-run 6th inning to pull away and put the Rays away for good. They went on to add another run in the bottom of the 7th to make it a 13-5 game. Brett Gardner had an impressive day at the office, as he went 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI’s.
By the end of 9 innings, there were seven different Yankees who found an RBI. The Yankees made a move to acquire Kendrys Morales from the Athletics, which was a nice move given the status of Aaron Judge. Judge is never going to be operating at 100% this season, so another bat was necessary for the Yanks. Giancarlo Stanton and Didi Gregorius are both nearing rehab stints, with light at the end of the tunnel getting bigger for the Yankees in that regard.
Despite the injury bug hitting the Yankees hard, others have stepped up tremendously to keep this team afloat. There aren’t many teams who could have sustained that type of blow and still won games like the Yankees did. They enter the new week with a record of 28-17. It’s good for 1st in the AL East, as they are fending off the Rays by 0.5 games. With their win over Tampa on Sunday, they were able to retake the lead in the division.
The Yankees are favorites in the AL East, while the Rays and Red Sox are going to linger throughout the season. If the Yankees get a healthy Stanton and Gregorius back, it’s going to be tough to shy away from the Yankees. Even without Judge at 100%, they’re still going to be a tricky lineup for any pitcher to navigate. J.A. Happ will see the start for the Yankees in Baltimore, while Andrew Cashner is expected to counter for the Orioles. Head below for our free Yankees vs. Orioles pick.
N.Y. Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles Pick:
Betting odds provided by bovada.lv
This will already be the ninth time that the Yankees and Orioles play each other this season. The Yankees own a record of 6-2 over the Orioles this season and have won the previous five games. Despite the Yankees utilizing a plethora of minor leaguers during that time, they’ve had little issues dispatching the Orioles. Note that the Yankees have gone 13-3 in their last sixteen trips to Camden Yards as well. In other words, the Yankees have thoroughly dominated this series, which isn’t much of a surprise given the lack of success the Orioles have had. Overall, the O’s are just 6-15 at home in 2019.
J.A. Happ will be happy to be outside of Yankee Stadium on Monday evening. He has had a heck of a time trying to find outs at Yankee Stadium, but when he moves out of that hitter friendly park, his numbers go up drastically. Happ has been getting killed by the short porch in his own ballpark. He has given up 9 home runs in New York to just 2 on the road. Also, Happ holds an ERA of 1.96 and 0.93 WHIP away as opposed to a 5.93 ERA and 1.35 WHIP at home.
Happ has done a tremendous job boggling up the Orioles’ offense as well. They are hitting just .212 in 165 at-bats. Renato Nunez has had the most success against Happ, but he has been ice cold recently and hasn’t been able to hit anybody. Baltimore have been struggling offensively this season, with only 3.83 runs scored per game for 26th in the majors. The Yankees are hitting .284 with a .349 OBP in 218 at-bats against Cashner. I see a 6-3 or 7-4 win for the Yankees here to give us a winning pick on the Yankees’ runline.
