Blazers vs. Timberwolves Pick – April 3rd

There's only one game on the NBA slate tonight; the hottest team in the NBA, Portland trailblazers looking to stay blazing in Minnesota against the Timberwolves.  Can they grab a seventh straight win?

It’s a limited NBA schedule tonight as the pros step aside for the college kids and the National Title game.  Ok, it’s a VERY limited slate with just one game to watch.  But at least it is a game with some importance as the Portland Trailblazers are slight underdogs in the Target Center against the Timberwolves in a game the Blazers REALLY need to win.  Portland enters tonight two games clear of the Nuggets for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The eight seed may not be a great situation – you get offered up on the altar of the Golden State Warriors like a fatted calf – but with a six-game winning streak and winners of nine of the last ten they haven’t abandoned hopes of close the final three game gap between they and the seventh seeded Grizzlies.

Meanwhile, Minnesota has long since turned the focus to “next year” after entering this season with hopes of turning the corner.  It didn’t happen, but the talent is undoubtedly in place for big things to come sometime soon…

It’ll be a good game in the Target Center.   Let’s make it a great one by cashing in a winning play.

Today’s NBA Pick:

Portland Trailblazers at Minnesota Timberwolves -2

Let’s start with the obvious factors; this game means WAY more to Portland and Portland is playing WAY better basketball.  They are also a decent road team at 16-23 SU.  Minnesota isn’t a particularly good home team at just 19-20 SU.  Their ATS splits are similar, Portland at 19-18 ATS on the road and Minny at 20-19 ATS at home.  It hasn’t mattered much who the competition was either, as Minnesota is just .500 ATS as a home favorite.

This play for me tonight is all abut trends and momentum.  Portland has covered five games in a row.  They are playing a non-playoff team and they are rested and getting a few points.  That makes them a very attractive value.  Minnesota is just 2-7 ATS in their last nine games overall, though they have covered five of their last seven home games.  That number is still bested by Portland’s 6-1 ATS mark in their last seven road games.

Portland is about as hot as an NBA team can be.  They’ve been ripping off wins left and right – their only loss in their last ten games is to Milwaukee by three and they own wins over San Antonio, Miami and the big win over Denver.

I like the Blazers to stay blazin’ tonight and grab a seventh straight victory and close in on a well-earned playoff berth.
