Charlotte Hornets vs. Phoenix Suns Pick – NBA December 19, 2021

The Charlotte Hornets and Phoenix Suns are scheduled at the Footprint Center on Sunday night. This should be a good one between a red-hot Suns team and a Hornets team that can score points in bunches.

The Suns are going into this contest with a record of 23-5 and tied for first in the Western Conference. Golden State is at 23-5 following a 119-100 loss in Toronto versus the Raptors last night.

That was a throwaway game for the Warriors, as they didn’t have multiple players travel to Canada due to “rest” and injuries.

The real explanation is that the Warriors didn’t want to have Stephen Curry possibly test positive for Covid and have to quarantine in Toronto.

Phoenix is coming off a 118-98 blowout over the Washington Wizards on Thursday. Despite no Devin Booker, the Suns have been in fine form with a 111-107 win in OT over the Trail Blazers, and then the easy win at home.

The Suns are winners in four of their last five attempts, and while Booker isn’t present with a bad hamstring, they are still a very strong roster with Deandre Ayton on the floor.

Ayton and Booker both out would hurt, but it’s manageable at the moment. This doesn’t include when they’re going to have to play top caliber talent.

Booker has to be there if the Suns are going to win a seven-game series versus elite competition. The Wizards and Hornets aren’t elite talent. Charlotte is coming off a 125-116 loss in Portland on Friday.

That sounds about right for the Hornets, all offense and no defense. They are going into the desert at 16-15. Again, that is about right for the Hornets.

Hornets vs. Suns Prediction:

The Hornets have a fun offense that is entertaining to watch play. They move quickly and have decent ball movement.

There’s plenty of offensive talent to go around on their starting five. Off the bench, Kelly Oubre Jr. provides them with solid depth as well.

Charlotte is going into tonight with an average of 115.6 points scored per game. They are the top scorers in the NBA.

Note that the Hornets are shooting 46.5% from the field for sixth, and the best team in the league from deep at a 38.6% clip. However, with good offense comes bad defense.

The Hornets don’t have a concept on how to play defense. That’s how a team scoring 115.6 points a game is hovering around .500.

Charlotte Hornets vs. Phoenix Suns Betting Trends:

  • 5-11 ATS in their previous 16 games on the road
  • 9-20 ATS in their previous 29 games as an underdog on the road
  • 5-13-1 ATS in their previous 19 games versus a team with a winning percentage better than 60%
  • 21-46 ATS in their previous 67 games on the road versus a team with a winning home record
  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six on a Sunday

  • 6-1-1 ATS in their previous eight games on a Sunday
  • 9-4 ATS in their previous 13 games after covering the spread
  • 8-3 ATS in their previous 11 games at home versus a team with a losing record
  • 6-2 ATS in their previous eight games after their opponent scores more than 100 points
  • 4-1 ATS in their previous four games versus the Eastern Conference

The Hornets can’t play a lick of defense, which probably isn’t going to work against a physical team like the Suns. Charlotte has gotten hammered for 116.6 points per game for 30th in the NBA.

Opponents are shooting an impressive 47.2% versus the Hornets this season. That’s good for 28th in the NBA. If they tried a thing called rebounding, things would get better for the Hornets.

Charlotte is 28th in defensive and 26th in offensive rebounding. Teams are shooting well versus the Hornets, and when they’re not, there’s often loose balls to pick up second chance points. Ayton should dominate this one.

The Suns are 2nd with a field goal percentage of 47.5% while scoring 111 points per game. Booker might be absent, but the Suns are still scoring the ball.

Shutting down the Charlotte offense completely is tough, but the Suns should do just enough to hold the Hornets at bay.

The Suns are third in the NBA, with teams shooting 43.9% from the field. They’ve conceded 104.5 points a game, and 102.6 points a game at home in Phoenix.

Expect the Hornets to score in spurts at times, but expect them to wear out on the road versus a physical Suns’ defense. They should tire out when they need a jump.

I like the Suns to pull away for a 118-107 win or thereabout at home in this one.
