Charlotte Hornets vs. San Antonio Spurs Pick – NBA December 15, 2021

The Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Spurs saddle up at the AT&T Center for what could be an entertaining matchup on Wednesday night. The Hornets aren’t going anywhere this season, but at least they’re a fun team to watch.

They drop into San Antonio with a record of 15-14 following a 120-96 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. Prior to that outing, the Hornets recorded an entertaining 124-123 win over the Sacramento Kings.

LaMelo Ball was on the healthy and safety list for the last four games. Ball was coming off a huge performance against the Milwaukee Bucks in a 127-125 loss on December 1. He scored 36 points on 12-22 shooting and 8-15 from three.

Ball was held off the floor after that game, but is scheduled back in San Antonio. He will provide a big boost to a Hornets team that is not at their best without him on the floor. Not even close.

The Hornets lost three of four games in the absence of Ball on the court. With Ball back in action, we get a pretty good matchup against Dejounte Murray of the Spurs.

Besides Zach Collins, the injury report is clean for the Spurs going into tonight. When the Spurs are healthy with Jakob Poeltl, and the talented trio of Murray, Keldon Johnson, and Derrick White on the floor, the Spurs are a pretty good team.

I think they’re at least better than their record of 10-16 suggests. They are coming off a 112-97 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday in an impressive response after a 127-112 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Hornets vs. Spurs Prediction:

The Spurs can’t expect to see the same struggling Hornets team that has been on the floor recently. LaMelo Ball changes everything for Charlotte. He has scored 20 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game through 24 games.

You can’t remove that production from the floor and expect the same result. The overall body of work from the Hornets has been entertaining at least. They aren’t going to be a threat as a playoff contender, but I like watching their games.

The Hornets are second in the NBA with an average of 115.1 points scored per game. They rate amongst the best teams in the league from deep. Charlotte is shooting an impressive 38.3% from three for second in the NBA.

San Antonio is towards the back of the league in defending the three-pointer. They’ve allowed teams to shoot 35.9% from three for 22nd in the NBA. This has to be driving Gregg Popovich nuts.

Charlotte Hornets vs. San Antonio Spurs Betting Trends:

  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six games
  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games after failing to cover the spread
  • OVER is 9-0 in their previous nine games after a loss by more than 10 points
  • OVER is 7-1-1 in their previous nine games
  • OVER is 5-1-1 in their previous seven games as an underdog

  • 7-1 ATS in their previous eight games on two-day rest
  • 9-2 ATS in their previous 11 games as a favorite
  • 7-2 ATS in their previous nine games
  • OVER is 20-7 in their previous 27 games at the AT&T Center
  • OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games as a favorite at the AT&T Center

The Spurs are 19th in the league defensively with 108.7 points allowed per game. For a coach like Popovich who likes to see defense, this isn’t particularly thrilling for him.

That said, his offense is scoring at a pretty decent clip. They’re better than they get credit for when healthy.

San Antonio is fourth in the NBA with a field goal percentage of 45.8%. The Spurs are going into Wednesday night with an average of 108.5 points scored per game.

At the AT&T Center in San Antonio, the Spurs’ scoring has improved to 113.8 points scored a game. They should be able to throttle a Charlotte defense giving up too many points on the road, with an average of 118.2 points conceded per game.

It looks probable that both teams should be able to reach around 115 points in Texas tonight. A final score of 117-115 or 119-115 looks good between the Hornets and Spurs.
