In this assignment tonight, the Charlotte Hornets remain on the road for a stop in Utah at Vivint Arena for their fifth game of a six-game road trek. Charlotte is coming off a 137-106 loss to the Phoenix Suns in the desert last night. It was the second outing in a row that their anemic defense was on full display.
The Suns made it look easy in Devin Booker’s return to the floor. The Suns didn’t need a monster performance from Booker with contributions from everywhere. Nine players scored in the double digits over the Hornets.

JaVale McGee off the bench had a nice showing to lead the Suns in scoring 19 points and 7 rebounds. Charlotte has been abysmal defensively this season, and the Suns made it look too easy in that one.
The Hornets were coming off a 125-116 loss versus the Portland Trail Blazers before their trip to Phoenix, so they didn’t figure out their defensive problems in one game. On Thursday, Charlotte will wrap up their six-game road trip with a stop in Denver.
So far, during this trip, their only win was against the San Antonio Spurs on December 15, 131-115. If the offense doesn’t show up for the Hornets, it’s hard for them to win too many games. They don’t have the talent defensively to win low-scoring outings consistently.
The Jazz are coming off back-to-back losses against the Spurs, 128-126, and Wizards, 109-103. They came back in better form defensively after the Spurs debacle on defense, but their offense was uncharacteristically silent.

Utah was on an eight-game winning streak before losing a close one to the Spurs on Friday. They weren’t prepared in the least for a back-to-back the next day versus the Wizards.

Hornets vs. Jazz Prediction:
The Hornets have talent on their roster, but there will not be progress until they address their defense. The good news is that a very good team in the West was a lot like the Hornets years back.
The Phoenix Suns early in the Devin Booker era could score, but they weren’t winning many games because of defensive liabilities. Now today, the Suns are one of the best defensive teams in the league.
Charlotte hopes to follow the same blueprint as the Suns. The Hornets are entering Monday night with 115.3 points per game for second-best in the league.
They are also second-best from three with a 38% three-point percentage. Too bad none of the Hornets’ offensive prowess has translated into defensive help. The Hornets will not win consistently with their current defensive setup in Charlotte.
After a slow performance on Saturday, expect the Jazz to respond well offensively. They have conceded an average of 117.3 points per game for 30th in the NBA. Opponents have shot 47.5% versus the Hornets this season.
Charlotte Hornets vs. Utah Jazz Betting Trends:
- 6-2 ATS in their previous eight games
- 5-1 ATS in their previous six games after a loss
- OVER is 10-1-1 in their previous 12 games
- OVER is 10-1 in their previous 11 games after a loss by more than 10 points
- OVER is 7-1 in their previous eight games on the road
- 2-5 ATS in their previous seven games on one-day rest

- OVER is 5-1 in their previous six games at Vivint Arena
- OVER is 11-3-1 in their previous 15 games
- OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games on a Monday
The Jazz are the highest-scoring team in the NBA with 115.6 points a game. They also have the highest field goal percentage at 48.1%.
Rudy Gobert changes everything on the floor for the Jazz. He puts a lot of strain on defenses. They have to attempt to contain Gobert and then worry about the Jazz from the outside.
— Utah Jazz (@utahjazz) December 19, 2021
The Hornets do not have the required personnel to bother Gobert and the Jazz guards. Running and gunning and hoping they can keep up is likely going to be their best game plan in this one.
Look for a high-scoring game at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. Points should be easy to come by, with a final score of 128-115 or thereabout in this matchup.
