The Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards are scheduled to meet at Capital One Arena on Sunday evening. These are two teams going in opposite directions at the moment. The Cavaliers are running on fumes and counting down the days until the season is over. They head into tonight with 21-38 and losses in four of their last five games.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 108-102 loss against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night. Give the Cavaliers’ defense some credit for showing up to play a competitive game, but the offense didn’t have the firepower to pull away from the Hornets. This was with Collin Sexton in the lineup. Sexton has been a bright spot in an otherwise rough season for the Cavs.
He scored 28 points and 7 rebounds to keep the Cavaliers in the game. Darius Garland was a big contributor as well, so the guard play was strong for the Cavaliers on Friday night. Garland is going to have to step up and carry even more of the load in this one against the Wizards. Sexton has been ruled OUT with a concussion. That could be something that lingers for Sexton, so missing more than one game is a good possibility.
Without Sexton on the floor, the Cavaliers are missing a 24.5-point per game scorer. He’s shooting 48.7% from the field, and has consistently led the Cavaliers in production throughout the season. Kevin Love is finally back from a long time on the injured list, but he’s working with an inexperienced and young team. At least with Sexton, Love had something to work with. The onus will fall on Garland to be the go-to guard in the offense against the Wizards.
The Wizards are feeling confident going into this contest. They’re doing well recently on a seven-game winning streak. The Wizards are coming off an easy 129-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night. Even more impressive than that win was a 108-104 win against the Golden State Warriors before beating the Thunder. Forget tanking, Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook want to go to the playoffs. Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Washington Wizards NBA Betting Odds:
Cavaliers vs. Wizards Prediction:
The Cavaliers need to get a spark from somewhere tonight. That could be Kevin Love or Darius Garland, but they are going to face a serious mismatch against Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook. With the Cavaliers playing without Sexton tonight, they might have to rely on their defense to stay in this game. Despite an inconsistent offense this season, the defense has been holding up considerably well.
The Cavaliers are 12th in the NBA with 110.9 points against per game. Through their last five games they’ve been consistent in that regard, with an average of 109.4 points against per contest. That also goes for their effort on the road, where the Cavaliers have held the opposition to 109.2 points per game. However, even with an active Sexton this year, the Cavaliers have struggled to score points on a consistent basis.
The Cavaliers are 30th in the league with just 104 points against per game. On the road, the Cavaliers have managed to record only 99.9 points per game. The Wizards have shown a lot of improvement lately, and their defense has played a big role on that. Wizards’ fans have been waiting for their defense to some form of resistance, as they were getting run over and losing high-scoring shootouts every night.
Defense has been emphasized by the Cavaliers over the last few weeks. If it wasn’t for overtime against the New Orleans Pelicans on April 16, the Wizards would have held four of their last five opponents to fewer than 110 points. The one team to score more than 110 was Steph Curry and the Warriors.
Keeping the Warriors to 114 points for this defense is awfully impressive. Through their last five outings, the Wizards have conceded 109 points per game, which includes the overtime matchup against the Pelicans, a 117-115 win. The total in this game looks too inflated. It isn’t based on what the Wizards have been doing defensively recently. The public hasn’t caught on yet. I would look at the UNDER on a total that has too many points.
