After a long break due to the holiday, I return to the NBA DFS grind for a look at the main slate at FanDuel on Monday night. DFS gamers are headed into a fun seven-game schedule and will have plenty of starts to pick from.
James Harden, Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant lead the way and you’ll have to gauge if going balanced is the better call or if one of these superstars is worth paying up for. Let’s dive in and see what my favorite daily fantasy basketball strategy is tonight for FanDuel GPPs:
PG: Quinn Cook – Golden State Warriors ($5.4k)
Cook continues to get solid run and should see ample opportunities to create offense for himself and others with Draymond Green ruled out for tonight. Orlando is not a tough matchup at all, so he could be in for a big game and is simply too cheap on this slate.
PG: Collin Sexton – Cleveland Cavaliers ($5.8k)
Paying up at point guard isn’t completely out of the question, but a few of the elite options are banged up or a tad over-priced. I’d rather spend my cash elsewhere and I like Sexton’s scoring ability in what should be a DFS-friendly showdown against the Timberwolves.
He popped off for 29 real points in his last outing, so it’s clear he’s starting to understand the league. Let’s hope he can keep that going tonight.
SG: Klay Thompson – Golden State Warriors ($7.2k)
Eric Gordon is probably a lock for me if Chris Paul is out again tonight. I think CP3 plays and I love the Rockets to cover their -2.5 spread in D.C., though. That’s one reason I don’t mind paying for Klay, who has been rock solid with 34+ fantasy points in four of his last five contests
Thompson doesn’t do much outside of scoring, but he’s got a good matchup at home against the Orlando Magic. He’s a fun way to close out this slate.
SG: Alec Burks – Utah Jazz ($3.5k)
Victor Oladipo and Donovan Mitchell are out tonight, so make a call on which Jazz and Pacers spares you wish to roster. It’s Burks for me, as he’s a great “low score” candidate and should continue to see about 20-25 minutes wkith Mitchell sidelined with an injury.
Burks can be awful or he can be a gem. Tonight I obviously hope he’s the latter and after failing to deliver in a similar spot in his last game, there’s hope his ownership will be deflated a bit.
SF: Kevin Durant – Golden State Warriors ($11.5k)
I’d have some interest in Nikola Mirotic if Anthony Davis is out tonight (update, Brow is playing), but truly I don’t like the idea of fading KD right now. He’s a better value than Giannis Antetokounmpo and has been wrecking with 60+ fantasy points in each of his last two games and 50+ in each of his last four.
He’s a lock for me and where I’m starting my NBA DFS lineup building process tonight.
SF: Cedi Osman – Cleveland Cavaliers ($5.5k)
I also don’t mind Bojan Bogdanovic or Tyreke Evans here, as well as Joe Ingles. They all should benefit from injury news and could be great plays. I prefer Cedi’s matchup and game environment, however. He’s actually been playing pretty well and this showdown against Minny bodes well for his DFS upside tonight.
PF: Aaron Gordon – Orlando Magic ($7.8k)
I doubt I want a big hand in the Magic tonight, but AG’s versatile skill-set fits well in a showdown with the defending champs. No Draymond Green should make this matchup even more enticing and he’s been kind to me in DFS so far in 2018. He’s also too cheap given his explosive nature and gives me yet another late-game hammer to get excited about.
PF: Jayson Tatum – Boston Celtics ($6.8k)
Jaylen Brown won’t play tonight, so I think it’s fine to take a stab at a Celtics player. Most will gravitate toward Kyrie Irving, but Tatum provides value at a fairly weak position. He’s shown he can score the ball and a showdown with the Pelicans should be good for his DFS upside. Let’s just hope the peripherals show up in this one.
C: Tristan Thompson – Cleveland Cavaliers ($6.7k)
I’m sure this will be the game Cleveland gets murdered and TT is awful, but I can’t ignore his string of great DFS outings. Thompson has been great lately and is coming off an insane 54-point fantasy outing. I won’t be chasing those points, but he’s at home and has a solid matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves
For what it’s worth, this game is a great DFS environment an TT will be needed with KAT on the floor. I prefer KAT’s upside, but Thompson provides value at the center position tonight and is going to be tough to pass up. That’s not something I thought I’d be saying, but here we are.
I’m starting my NBA DFS lineups with KD and working from there. I really like my three Warriors plays at home against the Magic and I’ll run that interest back with my favorite Orlando player. You can try other Magic players, but I’m stopping my exposure at Gordon.
I’m soaking up value elsewhere and Burks is an elite punt play. If he can smash, this lineup may have a real chance at climbing the ladder at the end of the night.
I can understand if you want an elite point guard or prefer studs like James Harden, Giannis Antetokounmpo or Anthony Davis over KD. I just don’t see the point in getting cute tonight.
Whatever your NBA DFS strategy ends up being, I wish you luck tonight. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the games!
