Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers Pick – NBA October 19, 2021

The Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers are the late game on an NBA doubleheader to tip-off the 2021-22 season. Thank goodness that the NBA is back now. It feels like since the end of the regular season in the major leagues, I’ve been counting down the minutes to the NBA.

The Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks meet in a rematch of the East Semifinal, while an all-California battle between the Warriors and Lakers at the Staples Center later in the night. I think the NBA got it right with these two games to open the season.

It would have been nice if Klay Thompson was back on the floor, but Stephen Curry versus Lebron James is always a nice marketable matchup for the league. The Warriors are hoping that Thompson will be back up to speed for the most important games in the spring, and then the postseason.

There was a huge gaping hole for the Warriors last season, and that hole was the spot where Thompson used to be. This team is so much more dynamic when you put Thompson on the floor. He and Andrew Wiggins haven’t played on the floor together yet as well. Wiggins is a player you either love or hate, but he would be a terrific No. 3 option in this offense.

I’m most excited to see the progress of center James Wiseman. If he takes a jump in his development this season, then the Warriors are going to be a contender again. If the 20-year-old stays stagnant and the Warriors don’t have a healthy Klay back, then it’s hard to see them competing with the top horses.

The Warriors went 15-50 two years ago with injuries killing their roster. The following season with Steph back and healthy, the Warriors improved to 39-33 and a spot in the play-in. Steph is obviously a great player, but he’s going to need help this year. Draymond Green failing to be in game shape for the season opener doesn’t help.

Green is expected to see restricted minutes at the Staples Center. Not just Green, but Wiggins is going to be dealing with a reduced workload as well. Both need time to get their conditioning back to form. The Lakers have a healthy Lebron on the floor with AD tonight. Head below for our free Warriors vs. Lakers pick on October 19, 2021.

Warriors vs. Lakers Prediction:

If Andrew Wiggins is going light in the season opener on load management, then the Warriors are really going to need somebody to step up. Wiggins gets criticized, but he did score 18.6 points per game on 47.7% shooting last year.

I’d argue that he might be a tad overrated based on his contract, but underrated if we’re talking about how much the media discounts him.

He would be an excellent No. 3 option on the Warriors with Steph and Klay, though the Warriors might not even have that against the Lakers tonight if Wiggins is on the bench because he’s out of shape.

Depending on James Wiseman to do something isn’t going to work because he’s OUT with an injury. That is going to leave the Warriors with a starting five featuring Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, and Kevon Looney.

If the Warriors are going to stay in this game, they’re going to have to rely on their defense. Unless Curry goes off for 50ish points, which is always possible, the Warriors likely aren’t going to find many scoring outputs here.

Kevon Looney on the blocks might be the x-factor in this one. If Looney gets bullied around by AD then it’s going to be a long night. However, I think to an extent, he should be able to bother the Lakers in the paint.

Golden State Warriors vs. LA Lakers Betting Trends:

  • 6-0 ATS in their previous six games
  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six games as an underdog
  • 7-1 ATS in their previous eight games versus the Western Conference
  • 2-7 ATS in their previous nine games versus the Pacific Division
  • UNDER is 6-1 in their previous seven games on the road
  • UNDER is 4-1 in their previous five games at the Staples Center

  • 3-8 ATS in their previous 11 games
  • 1-5 ATS in their previous six games at the Staples Center
  • UNDER is 4-1 in their previous five games versus the Warriors at the Staples Center
  • UNDER is 6-2 in their previous eight games versus the Western Conference
  • UNDER is 8-4 versus the Warriors

The Lakers’ defense was easily the most underrated aspect of their team last season. They conceded 106.8 points per game to lead the Western Conference.

This was a unit that was on top of offenses when they were healthy, and then even without Lebron and AD, the Lakers held strong defensively.

Frank Vogel has to get credit for what he’s done with the Lakers’ defense. Despite the names on their roster, this isn’t a Lakers team that runs up and down the field looking to score.

They are very methodical with their decision making and don’t like to waste trips. Take quality shots, and then rely on the defense to win.

I’m confident that the Lakers should do a solid job containing a Warriors’ offense that doesn’t have the best bodies on the floor.

Without Green and Wiggins in game shape yet, the Warriors will likely depend on Andre Iguodala and Otto Porter Jr. heavily off the bench. The Lakers should have their offense contained.

The total in this one looks inflated at 226.5 points. Klay Thompson and Steph together? Yeah, that would look good. I think the Lakers can slow this one down to avoid the Warriors running up and down.

The UNDER is probably the best place to look. I play small units over the first two or three weeks, but hopefully this is a good start in the NBA after a profitable season a year ago. I finished with a ROI of 2%. Fine, but let’s look for better in 2021-22.
