The NBA is set up with another great slate of basketball throughout Sunday. Seven games are up on the board throughout January 24. One of these games will be between the Charlotte Hornets and the Orlando Magic. These two teams have struggled throughout the early portion of this season, but will look to get a big win in this one. This game will tip off at around 7:00 PM Eastern time.
The Hornets have opened up this season with a record of 6-9, which has them sitting in twelfth place of the Eastern Conference. Charlotte has lost four games in a row coming into this one. The Hornets had won four games in a row before this losing streak and will look to turn it around with a win in this one. I expect Charlotte to come out fast and set the pace in this one.
Orlando has posted a record of 7-9 throughout this season, which has put them in tenth place of the Eastern Conference. The Magic are coming off a loss in their last game and have lost seven of their last eight games. Orlando has hit a wall after a 6-2 start to this season. The Magic will look to get going again with a win in this one.
These two teams have struggled to open up the new season, which has both teams sitting outside of the playoff picture. Both teams have also had struggled to get wins throughout their last few games. I expect the two teams to try and come out quick in this one. If either team can come out hot, it could give them an edge in this one.
The Hornets and the Magic met up twice throughout last season. Charlotte hosted the first game of the season series on January 20. Malik Monk scored 20 points off the bench, which was not enough. Evan Fournier scored 26 points for Orlando. Nikola Vucevic added 24 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the Magic to a 106-83 win on the road.
The second game of the season series stayed in Charlotte on February 3. Terry Rozier finished with 18 points, while Cody Zeller scored 17 points on the night. The Hornets still came up short in this one though. Nikola Vucevic dropped 22 points. Evan Fournier had 17 points, while Aaron Gordon had 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Magic took a 112-100 win to take the season series.
The Hornets hosted both games of last season’s series between Charlotte and Orlando. The Magic were able to win both games on the road. The Hornets will look to improve on offense in this one as they try to knock off the Magic. Orlando has won four games in a row coming into this one against the Hornets and will look to keep that winning streak going on Sunday night.
Field Goal Shooting
Charlotte has struggled to shoot the ball throughout this season. The Hornets have been able to make around 44.8 percent of their shots from the field, which is 20th in the league. Charlotte has shot 35.8 percent of their shots from deep, which is 16th in the NBA. The Hornets are shooting 73.7 percent from the free throw line, which is 23rd in the league.
The Magic have been even worse shooting the ball so far this season. Orlando has been able to make 42.8 percent of their shots from the field, which is 29th in the NBA. The Magic are shooting 32.8 percent from behind the arc this season, which is 30th in the league. Orlando has been able to make 78.3 percent of their free throws, which is 9th in the NBA.
The Hornets have not been great shooting the ball from the field this season, but are much better than Orlando. Charlotte has been better on defense as well this season. The Hornets have been able to hold opposing teams to a 45.2 percent shooting percentage, which is 10th in the league. Charlotte will look to dominate from the field in this one to earn the win.
Gordon Hayward has helped lead this Hornets team this season. Hayward is averaging 23 points per game. Terry Rozier has averaged 19.5 points, while Devonte’ Graham is averaging 13.5 points and 6.5 assists per game. P.J. Washington has averaged 13 points per game, while LaMelo Ball is averaging 11.5 points per game off the bench.
Nikola Vucevic has been the leader for Orlando early in the season. Vucevic has averaged 23.5 points and 11 rebounds per game. Evan Fournier is averaging 17.5 points per game. Terrance Ross has averaged 15.5 points per game. Aaron Gordon is averaging 15 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while Cole Anthony has averaged 10 points per game.
These two teams have been able to step up with their stars throughout this season. Both teams have had some younger players step up early in the season as well. LaMelo Ball has quieted down a bit after his strong start to the season. The Hornets will look for Ball to lead them to the win on Sunday night. If either team can have their young stars step up in this one, it could be enough for the win.
The Magic have knocked off Charlotte the last four times they have played, but I think that the Hornets can bounce back with a win in this one. Charlotte is looking to bounce back after this four game losing streak. Orlando has struggled as well early in the season, but I think that the Hornets can play better from the field. If Charlotte can shoot well early, it could lead to a big lead on Sunday night.
BetOnline has the Magic listed as a -120 against the money line in this one. This implies that Orlando will win this game around 54.6 percent of the time. I think that the Hornets will come out quicker in this one, which should lead to a win for Charlotte. I like the value on the Hornets as underdogs in this one, making them my pick on the night.
