Houston Rockets vs. Dallas Mavericks Pick – NBA March 23, 2022

The Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks are at American Airlines Arena looking for a win on Wednesday night. Houston seeks to make it rare back-to-back wins in Dallas tonight.

The Rockets are coming off a 115-97 at home over the Washington Wizards to end a five-game losing streak. Before the nice win, the Rockets had lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in another humiliating experience in a 122-98 loss.

Getting blown out has become a common theme for the Rockets this season. They are 18-54 and have the worst record in the NBA.

Houston is in a good position to win the draft lottery and continue to rebuild their franchise. The cupboard isn’t completely empty for the Rockets.

Christian Wood and Jalen Green are solid building blocks for the Rockets. Wood is coming off a monster performance with 39 points and 10 boards versus the Wizards.

He buried eight threes, as Wood was untouchable in the win. The Rockets will need more of that versus the Mavericks in Dallas tonight.

After a 110-108 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves two games back, Dallas is looking to stay on course. They hit a skid with losses against the 76ers and Hornets before getting on track.

Despite the two losses, the Mavericks had won eight of nine games before losing in back-to-back attempts. They are entering this one with a record of 44-28 and the fifth-best team in the Western Conference.

Rockets vs. Mavericks Prediction:

You would expect the offense to be their focal point for a team with a talent like Luka Doncic on the roster, though this isn’t the case for the Mavericks.

As good as Doncic is for the Mavericks, they are more of a defensive team that likes to slow things down. The Mavericks lean heavily on their defensive pressure.

Dallas is second with 104.2 points against per game. They have been able to achieve this because of their activity around the three-point line.

Dallas is fourth in the league with a 34% three-point percentage against. They’ve done a nice job at limiting outside opportunities for teams.

Not good news for a Houston team that is spotty shooting the ball. Despite the fact that Christian Wood went off against the Wizards, the Rockets can be inconsistent.

I’m willing to bet that this isn’t a highlight reel for the Rockets after that win and in Dallas versus a tough Mavericks’ defense.

Houston Rockets vs. Dallas Mavericks Betting Trends:

  • 0-5 ATS in their previous five games on the road
  • 2-12 ATS in their previous 14 games after covering the spread
  • 13-31 ATS in their previous 44 games as an underdog
  • 1-7 ATS in their previous eight games after a double-digit win
  • 0-4 ATS in their previous four games versus a team with a winning record
  • 13-6-1 ATS in their previous 20 games
  • 7-3 ATS in their previous ten games at home
  • 11-4-1 ATS in their previous 16 games on one-day rest
  • 5-2 ATS in their previous seven games versus a team with a winning percentage worse than 40%
  • 8-1 ATS in their previous nine games versus the Western Conference

In the last two meetings between the Rockets and Mavericks, it was clear why the Mavs won by double digits in each game. Dallas held the Rockets to 106 and then 100 points in a 130-106 and 113-100 final.

These two just met two weeks back in Houston, with the Rockets struggling to figure out how to navigate the offense effectively. Defense is something that the Rockets wish they had most of all. They’ll continue to lose big if things don’t change in the offseason.

The Rockets are 30th with a 48.3% field goal percentage allowed and 118.2 points conceded per game. At home this season, the Mavs have given up 102.4 points per game and a 45.2% field goal percentage.

Off one of their best efforts this in a while, expect the Rockets to regress in Dallas. The Mavs are without Doncic, but they’ll rely on their defense to force the Rockets out of this one. I’d look at the Mavericks to win and cover the double-digit spread at home.
