Last night was pretty easy money. Dallas throttled the Timberwolves, who have been playing good basketball, on the backend of a road back-to-back to notch us an easy winner. It’s nice to have a few games with some breathing room from time to time. Hopefully we can find another one tonight.
In other NBA news, the Raptors dropped a game against the Pistons yesterday. The loss was made more odd by the fact the Raptors decided to rest Kyle Lowry, despite no apparent injury. They were just giving their franchise point guard a day to rest and recoup. It might be a wise strategy in the long run, and one more and more teams have been embracing, but it was odd timing given the momentum of their great win against the Cavaliers to pull within a few games of the top seed. I was pretty surprised they were willing to give a winnable game away this close to the finish line…

Today’s Free Pick:
Utah Jazz at Boston Celtics -5.5
Just when the path to the postseason looked to be coming into focus for Utah, they have taken a big step backwards. The Jazz have lost five of their last seven games including a home loss to the Nets and a pair of damaging road losses to the Pelicans and Blazers.
Meanwhile, the Celtics have won 13 of their last 17 and covered five of their last six games at home. They have won ten straight home games including wins over the Clippers, Bulls, Pacers, Pistons and Heat. They have covered in five of their last six meetings with the Jazz as well.
This should be a good matchup on paper, but the trends in each direction are overwhelmingly favoring Boston, so it is hard to bet against them tonight, even with the six point lay down. Also working on Boston’s favor – the last time they saw the Jazz they put down one of their worst clunkers of the season in a twenty point road loss. That loss should sharpen any lost focus for tonight and ensure the Celtics are ready to rock. They are 19-10 overall at home this season. The Jazz are just 9-18 away from Salt Lake.
Perhaps it is time to start taking the C’s more seriously. Since January 12th they lead the NBA with a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio and are the second-highest scoring team in the league behind only the Warriors. Can they win the East? Probably not. But can they win a series or maybe even two? Don’t count them out.
I’ll take Boston to continue rolling at home against a team with their fair share of road woes.
