The NBA is set up with another action packed Tuesday night. Five games are up on the board throughout January 5. One of these games will be between the Utah Jazz and the Brooklyn Nets. These two teams are looking to put up strong starts to the season, including a win in this one. This game will tip off at around 7:30 PM Eastern time.
The Jazz have earned a record of 4-2 throughout this season, which has them in fourth place of the Western Conference. Utah is coming off back to back wins coming into this one and will look to add a third straight win in this one. The Jazz are looking to move up in the Western Conference after getting eliminated in the first round last season.
Brooklyn has put up a record of 3-4 so far this season. The Nets are sitting in ninth place of the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn has lost back to back games and four of their last five coming into this one. I expect the Nets to come out strong on Tuesday night as they look to break out of this funk. Brooklyn also had a first round exit in last seasons playoffs and will look to do much better this season.
These two teams are looking to move up the standings early in the season with a win in this one. These two teams were knocked out early last season and are looking to fight back with a win. I expect the Jazz and the Nets to come out hot in this one as they try to control the pace early. If either team can break through big early, it could be enough to power them to a win.
Utah and Brooklyn met up twice throughout last season. The Jazz hosted the first game on November 12. Kyrie Irving finished with 27 points on the night, while Spencer Dinwiddie dropped 21 points off the bench. Donovan Mitchell scored 30 points on the night to help lead Utah though. Rudy Gobert scored 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Mike Conley added 18 points as well. The Jazz earned a 119-114 win in this one.
The second game of the season series on January 14. Kyrie Irving scored 32 points and 11 assists, but it once again was not enough for the Nets. Joe Ingles scored 27 points, while Donovan Mitchell finished with 25 points. Rudy Gobert put up 22 points and 18 rebounds to help lead the Jazz to another win. Utah finished with a 118-107 win on the road.
The Jazz were able to sweep the season series against the Nets last season. Utah has won four straight games against the Nets and I believe Brooklyn has a chance to break through on the Jazz in this one. The Nets have struggled in their last five games, with their only win coming against the Atlanta Hawks. Brooklyn will look to find some early season success with a win in this one.
Mike Conley and Donovan Mitchell has been able to help lead the Jazz early this season. Conley is averaging 20.5 points and 5 assists per game. Mitchell has averaged 20 points and 5.5 assists per game. Jordan Clarkson is averaging 15.5 points per game, while Rudy Gobert has averaged 14.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game. Bojan Bogdanovic is averaging 14 points per game to help round out the lineup.
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are the leaders for this Brooklyn team this season. Durant has averaged 28 points and 7 rebounds per game. Irving is averaging 27 points and 6.5 assists per game. Joe Harris has averaged 14 points per game to help lead the Nets this season. Caris LeVert is averaging 13 points and 5.5 assists per game off the bench.
These two teams have had their stars step up early in this season. Conley and Mitchell both had strong seasons so far. Durant and Irving are having really strong starts after missing most of the season last season, Durant will be out in this one due to quarantine. The Nets will need their bench players to step up if they want to fill the void of his absence.
Field Goal Shooting
The Jazz have been around middle of the league when it comes to shooting this season. Utah has been able to make around 46.1 percent of their shots from the field this season, which is 15th in the league. The Jazz have also made 38 percent of their shots from deep, which is 7th in the NBA. Utah has made 52.5 percent of their shots in close, which is also 15th in the league.
Brooklyn has been solid shooting throughout this season. The Nets have shot 46.7 percent from the field early this season, which is 12th in the NBA. Brooklyn has been shooting around 38.4 percent from behind the arc as well, which is 6th in the league. The Nets are also shooting 52.8 percent from inside the arc, which is 13th in the NBA.
These two teams are shooting well this season, but both teams have been even better on defense. Utah has held opposing teams to a shooting percentage of 43.4 percent, which is 6th in the league. The Nets have held opponents to a field goal percentage of 42.5 percent, which is 2nd in the NBA. Both teams will look to slow down each other’s offenses in this one.
These two teams have shot well throughout this season, but defense plays a bigger role for the Jazz and the Nets. Brooklyn will look for their depth to step up in this one to help them get out of this losing streak. The Jazz have had nice back to back wins coming into this one and will look to keep it going. I think the Nets will come out faster though to take over early on Tuesday night.
BetOnline has Utah listed as a -197 against the money line in this one. This gives a solid edge to the Jazz on the road. This line makes a lot of sense with Kevin Durant out, but I still think that the Nets can earn a win in this one. Brooklyn just needs their bench players to step up a bit and Irving to lead the way on the scoreboard. If the Nets come out firing, I think they can pull off this upset at home.
