With game one of the 2010 NBA Championships about to kick-off on Thursday (June 6th) between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics it’s time to talk about the series. In 2008 these two teams met in the NBA Finals and the Celtics ended up walking away with the title in six games. Last year the Lakers battled against the Magic in the NBA Finals and they easily took the series by winning it in only five games.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Lakers are going to want revenge from the 2008 NBA Championships and I think they’re going to come out firing in game one. The Lakers will start the series at home for the first two games and they need to make sure that they win both of those games. The NBA Finals is different then the other playoff series and after the first two games in LA both teams will travel to Boston for the next three games before coming back to LA for the final two games if necessary.
If you’ve been watching the playoffs this year then you’ll know how important home court advantage has been in some of the series. The Lakers/Suns series was very lopsided for the home team until game six when the Lakers were finally able to beat the Suns on their own court. Apart from this year though, the NBA Championships has a long history of the home team winning the series. In the past decade the team with home court advantage in the NBA Finals has only lost twice.
Both teams will be coming into the series on almost the same page as it took both teams six games to win their Conference Final series earlier in the week. The Celtics will have the extra day of rest coming into game one, but I think that it might hurt them more then it’ll help them early in the game. If the Celtics come out flat footed I could see the Lakers taking an early double digit lead and then it’ll just depend on if they can hold the lead or not.
Los Angeles Lakers vs Boston Celtics NBA Finals Game 1 Betting Odds:
Boston Celtics +5.5
@ Los Angeles Lakers -5.5
Lakers vs Celtics Game 1 Prediction and Betting Picks:
Although I don’t really like laying –5.5 points with the Lakers I feel that it’s the smartest bet on Thursday. The home team has historically held an advantage in the NBA Finals and if the Lakers don’t come out of game one with a victory they’ll be in serious trouble. Phil Jackson will have his team ready to play in front of the fans and I expect both Gasol and Bryant to have monster games for the Lakers. It’s going to be a nail biter of a game to cover the –5.5 points, but I think they manage to come through with the cover after some clutch free throw shooting. BET THE LAKERS -5.5!
The 192 points for the over/under could easily go either way in game one. The Lakers can definitely score and run the fast break, but they can also sit back and settle a lot. I know for sure the Celtics are going to want to play a slow game, so this leads me to believe that the game will go under. The Celtics have a strong defense and they generally don’t mind grinding out low scoring games. My prediction for the game is Lakers 99 and Celtics 90. BET THE UNDER 192!
