Dallas Mavericks (14-28) at Charlotte Hornets (15-23)
Last night was one of the more inexplicable losses I have taken in the NBA this season. We backed the Oklahoma City Thunder at home against the Portland Trail Blazers. OKC came into the game hot, winners of eight out of their eleven games and looked primed to blow out a Blazers team that was playing without its best player, Damien Lillard. Instead, the Blazers just blasted them and dominated the game all night long. Portland won 117-106, and the game wasn’t even really as close as that final score showed.
The only person more shocked than me at the outcome, were the announcers on NBA TV! They couldn’t believe it either. What can you do, sometimes weird things happen in the NBA, we will move on to the next one. Today I will be breaking down a matchup of two very bad teams, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Charlotte Hornets.
The Dallas Mavericks will travel to Charlotte Wednesday night to face the Hornets. The Mavericks are a strange team this season, while their record looks very bad at 14-28, they have been showing signs of life recently, even if it hasn’t fully been reflected in the standings.
The Hornets just finished up the best road trip of their season at 3-1 with wins over Golden State, Sacramento, and the Lakers on a West Coast swing. The Hornets are big -7-point home favorites tonight. The game total over-under is set at 210 points. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM PST from the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.
The Dallas Mavericks aren’t a very good basketball team this year. They don’t win many games. But, and this is a big but, they are pretty good against the spread. They don’t manage to close too many games out for wins, but they keep the games close enough to win the games for the bettors that are backing them.
The Mavs finished out 2017 on a season-high four-game winning streak that had fans optimistic for a good start to 2018. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened as they are just 1-3 on the New Year. But, those three losses were all in very close games, the largest margin of loss for them was just four points.
They are either winning or losing very close over the course of the last couple of weeks. That creates a lot of value to back them as dogs, especially as big dogs tonight against an equally bad team in the Charlotte Hornets.
The Charlotte Hornets aren’t beating many teams either this season. They are much better at home, as most teams are, but even then, they are just 10-10 on their home court. The Hornets really struggled to score the ball as they shoot just 43% from the field.
Kemba Walker is fun to watch, and he is going to do at least one thing every night that makes you say wow. Dwight Howard is even having a bit of a career resurgence as he is going for 16 points and 12 boards a game. Unfortunately, the good play of their two best players just hasn’t turned into many wins for them this season.
This isn’t a terribly built roster, and they really aren’t rebuilding, so I am curious to see how the rest of the year plays out. Do they flip an aging Howard to a playoff team for pieces as he is actually showing a little value at the moment or do they stand pat and hope to make a run for the eighth seed in the playoffs?
To me, this line is just way too big. Yes, Dallas sucks. But Charlotte is not much better. They picked up that big win against Golden State and had a solid road trip, so I think the public is thinking that maybe they have gotten their act together, but I need to see more before I start backing them as big favorites against anybody. I just don’t trust them to put a full 48 minutes together and blow this team out.
And the Mavericks have done a very admirable job at keeping games close against some good teams, and this isn’t even a good team. I am going to bet against the Hornets as much as I am betting on the Mavericks in this one. Give me the Dallas Mavericks getting +7 points tonight from Charlotte.
