NBA Pick for December 27th – Grizzlies vs Lakers

Memphis Grizzlies (10-24) at Los Angeles Lakers (11-21)

The betting line information used for this article was taken from at 7:30 AM PST on 12-27-17. Some odds may have changed.

The winning streak has hit four straight games as I brought you another winner last night. The Phoenix Suns used a dunk from Tyson Chandler with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock to seal the victory over Memphis. We had the Suns as home underdogs, and they won the game outright. Tonight, I will once again be evaluating a game involving the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Memphis Grizzlies will try and recover from a devastating loss last night at the buzzer, as they continue their west coast swing tonight in Los Angeles, against the Lakers. The Grizzlies ten wins on the season are good for the lowest win total in the Western Conference, and they have lost eight of their last ten games, including the heartbreaker last night in Phoenix.

The Lakers haven’t been much better as they are sitting at 11-21 on the season and have lost seven of their last ten. It should be an ugly game between two bad teams tonight from the Staples Center. The Lakers are -2.5-point home favorites. The game total over-under is set at 199 points. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM PST from the City of Angels.

I won’t go too far into breaking down just how bad the Memphis Grizzlies are this season. They just aren’t any good and don’t have a lot of prospects for the future. I expect that any pieces they have that another team may want are going to be up for grabs any day now.

The NBA trade machine is revving up, and we should see several Memphis players on the move before the deadline. You can expect to see Marc Gasol and Chandler Parsons moved for sure, and maybe even Tyreke Evans or Mike Conley, the fire sale is coming in Memphis.

The fact that the Grizzlies were road favorites last night blew my mind. They closed out at -2.5-point favorites! That is insane. This team is garbage, and especially bad on the road, if you thought backing them as road favorites was a good idea, against anybody, you need to check yourself. Now we have the same team tonight that is playing back to back games on the road at another close number.

Really? What is it that I am not seeing about this Memphis Grizzlies team that everyone else seems to like? Yeah, the Lakers stink too, but come on. You are going to give me a home team, and well-rested Lakers squad, after having last night off, against the worst team in the Western Conference on the road, playing back to back? Really? Ok, I’ll bite.

I get it, Lonzo Ball can’t shoot. But the Lakers knew that when they drafted him though. Its about everything else the rookie can do that is exciting. Not only is Ball leading the team in assists, at over seven a game, he is also leading the team in rebounds as well. Ball already has a couple triple doubles under his belt and really fills up the stat sheet every night. As his game continues to improve and trust me it will, it will only benefit the Lakers.

Ball reminds me a bit of a young Giannis Antetokounmpo, very rough around the edges but can do a lot of great things on the court to help his team win. We saw what some polish did to the Greek Freak’s game, I am expecting similar things from Lonzo Ball. Maybe not this season, but at some point, this kid is an All-Star, you can book that.

The Lakers are young and improving. They have a great young core of talent to build around in Ball, Brandon Ingram, Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr, and Julius Randle. This team is eventually going to be a good one if they can keep all the parts together. As the season drags on this team is going to learn together and get better every night.

Do I think they turn it around and make the playoffs this season? No, I don’t. But they will be closer to contending by the end of the season than most are giving them credit for. The Grizzlies, on the other hand, are old and beat up, and looking to blow it all up and start over any minute.

I am not betting on the Los Angeles Lakers tonight. I am betting against the worst road team in the conference playing back to back games a long way from home.  I am not completely sure how the Lakers are going to get the job done tonight, but I am sure that Memphis will do everything in its power to try and blow it down the stretch. The line is a tight one and doesn’t scare me off the home team. Give me the Lakers at home laying a little wood tonight from the Staples Center.

The Bet: Los Angeles Lakers -2.5 points
