NBA Picks and Predictions for March 16th

Last night Carmello and the Knicks got a little taste of their own medicine, as it was Danny Granger and the Indiana Pacers with the late dramatics and the walk-off game winner.

Just a week after Carmello did the same to Milwaukee, even pausing to turn to the visitors’ bench to inform them, “I do this.” the situation gets reversed.

Somewhere LeBron James must have enjoyed a rye smile, and noted “karma” in action. Speaking of karma, let’s build on yesterday’s perfect 2-0 record and pick a few more winners.

Today’s Free NBA Picks:

Indiana Pacers @ Boston Celtics -10

I generally dislike teams playing the second game of a back-to-back as a principle, and in this case the principle becomes even more exascerbated by the fact is is a home and road for Indy; and the “road” part takes place in Boston.

Boston has lost three of four and fallen one game behind the sizzling Bulls for first place in the Eastern Conference. So, much like Miami, and Dallas; the sky is falling in Boston. Of course, no one seems to remember that the Celtics finished last season 23-23 before coming one quarter short of capturing their second NBA title in three years.

Indiana is a dreadful road team, and despite the Celtics recent slump, they get a tired team with inferior talent coming to their home arena. The Celtics have won seven in a row at home over the Pacers. It’s a good night for Boston to get right, I like the C’s with room to spare.

Denver Nuggets @ Atlanta Hawks -1

The Nuggets are a surprising 8-2 since their trade that shipped Carmello across the country to New York. Most (me included) assumed that this year would become a rebuilding year and a chance to audition players to determine who will stay and who will go next season once Chauncey and ‘Melo were shipped out.

Instead, the Nuggets have actually imrpoved their playoff position, and are looking like a dangerous first round sleeper. Tonight will be a nice test for them, going on the road to play a solid, veteran playoff team in the Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta seems to have found their legs after their four-game losing skid, winning their last two games. They have won three straight at home over the Nuggets, averaging 112.7 points on 50.8% shooting. Of course, those were the OLD Nuggets, who by Coach Karl’s on admission, generally failed to put a huge premium on the defensive side of the court.

That said, Atlanta is a tough ballclub, especially at home. They get lost in the attention avalance of the glamour teams in the East; Miami, Boston, Chicago, Orlando – and now even New York; people barely notice they are likely the fourth-best team in the Eastern Conference.

The mark of a solid, good playoff team is winning these type of games; the “toss-ups” if you will. I think Atlanta will use their balanced offense and huge rebounding advantage to handle their business on their home floor.
