NBA Picks and Predictions for March 1st

Steve Nash and the Suns continued to shine last night, even if it wasn’t real pretty to witness. Their trip to New Jersey got a little hairy when Anthony Morrow drained a three at the end of regulation to force the extra frame. The Nets nearly struck again in overtime, but Kris Humphrey’s tip off a Darron Williams missed runner was reviewed and ruled to be after the buzzer had sounded.

That left Channing Frye’s three-pointer with six seconds on the clock as the game winning bucket, his second in as many games – he also struck this weekend against the Pacers in Indianapolis.

Sometimes in a long NBA season it is vital to ‘escape’ with a win, despite a less than stellar effort. Tonight was exactly that type of night for the Phoenix Suns. It sure wasn’t pretty, but as they are fighting their way desperately to claw up to the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot, they’ll take ‘em any way they can get ‘em.

Today’s Free NBA Picks:

Dallas Mavericks -1.5 @ Philadelphia 76’ers

Very quietly, the 76’ers have complied one of the better home records in the NBA. Their 19-9 mark holds up well against many of the sure-fire playoff teams around the league. It’s their road record that has them mired in the 7th spot at East and an all but certain first round ouster.

For Dallas, home, road, the moon – these guys are winning just about anywhere you want to put them since the return of Dirk Nowitski from his injury. As a matter of fact, if you exclude the eleven game stretch Dirk sat out, you’d be looking at the team with the best record in the NBA – and it wouldn’t even be that close.

Since the big guy returned the Mavs are 17-3. Of course, that includes a few ‘shake of the rust’ games. They have reeled of 16 of their last 17, and have beaten some pretty good teams on the road in the process. They won in Phoenix, New York and even took down the Celtics in the Garden.

Phily has been great at home, but I don’t see them being the team to derail the Dirk Express. They matchup very poorly size-wise and could be in for a long night. Gimme Dallas laying the point and a half on the road.

Golden State Warriors @ Indiana Pacers -6

Golden State is one of those young, exciting teams that gives you flashes of promise… then gets on an airplane and makes you wonder if they were supposed to be landing in Mobile or Billings or some other godforsaken place on the D-League schedule. The Warriors aren’t quite ‘Wizards Bad’, but their 7-19 road record leaves much to be desired.

Indiana, who also struggles on the road, has been a decent home team this season, posting a record of 16-14, but certainly nothing to be intimidated by. There was some sentiment that the Pacers had turned a corner after dismissing Coach O’Brien, but it is starting to look like their brief burst of success might have had more to do with the schedule that the change on the bench. Wins over Toronto, Cleveland, Washington, New Jersey, Minnesota and Detroit aren’t much to get too excited about.

In fact, the Pacers have dropped four of their last five, and their lone win was a 1-point escape at home against the completely chaotic Pistons.

Picking Golden State isn’t so much an endorsement of the Warriors as it is a refusal to lay six points on the team with less talent. Give me Golden State and their spectacular young backcourt and the six points.
