NBA Picks and Predictions for March 6th

The game may not have looked great on paper, but at least we offered up the good folks of London the best in entertainment quality. At first blush, scheduling the Raptors and Nets as our initial European regular-season offering seems almost dismissive; however the triple-OT thriller that ensued was more than worth the price of admission.

The 137-136 final score yielded some impressive stat-lines. Keeping with the European flavor, some familiar faces poseted monster games. Ex-Laker Sasha Vucacic scored a season-high 25 points, including six three-pointers, and former #1 overall draft pick, Andrea Bargnani stuffed the stat sheet with 35 points and 12 rebounds.

It remains to be seen exactly the Association’s plan for overseas expansion, but for one night, the London crowd was treated to some of the most competitive, if not quite the best, that the NBA has to offer.

Today’s Free NBA Picks:

Memphis Grizzlies @ Dallas Mavericks -6.5

The Mavericks are the best team in the NBA that no one seems to notice. Outside of the San Antonio Spurs, no one in the NBA has a better record than Dallas, and more than half of their losses came during an eleven game stretch without Dirk Nowitski. The Mavericks enter tonight’s game winners of eight straight, and 18 of 19 overall.

Interestingly, the Grizzlies, who entered the league in 1995-1996 as the Vancouuver Grizzlies, have never won a season series against the Mavs – something they have a rare opportunity to do today if they can pull off the road upset.

Howver, the Mavs aren’t just winning, they are covering too. They have not won by less than six points in over two weeks. At home, they are averaging a disarming nine point edge for the season. That’s not just winning; that’s dominating.

Expect the home domination to continue tonight. I like the Mavs to make it 19 of 20, and to continue to keep some distant pressure on the Spurs.

Phoenix Suns +5.5 @ Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder fans and organization breathed a collective sigh of relief when Kevin Durant returned a game early from a tweaked ankle Friday night. Not only did Durant look healthy, he looked his typical MVP-like self, scoring 29 points leading the Thunder to their seven point road win over Atlanta.

Tonight they host the Phoenix Suns, who are playing some of their best basketball of the season, and are making a true playoff push. The have won four of five on their current road trip, and are looking to close it out with a fifth win.

The Suns have played well in Oklahoma City, winning their first matchup there in a 103-100 thriller back in December. In January, the Thunder eclipsed the Suns on the road, also a three-point thriller. Now, the Suns are playing much better basketball than in December, as they have won 12 of 16 overall and have closed to just one spot, and one game, out of the Playoff mix.

Winning on the road against a top opponent is never easy, but five and half is a lot to lay considering how well the Suns are playing of late. Give me Steve Nash, Vince Carter, Grant Hill and the seemingly ageless Suns on the road in a vital game for their Playoff surge.
