NBA Picks and Predictions for March 7th

The champs sent a resounding message to the entire league this afternoon; the Championship pathway still winds through Los Angeles. The Lakers 99-83 win at San Antonio was more dominant than the score would indicate. From the opening whistle, Los Angeles pushed the Spurs around and established a clear dominance, racing out to an early 35-13 lead, and never truly being challenged after.

Kobe Bryant downplayed the significance of the win, stating simply, “I don’t think it’s that big of a message we sent today.” Perhaps some of Phil’s Zen has rubbed off on the cerebral Bryant, opting for the mental backhand of disinterest rather than the brash punch of youthful bragging. Either way, the message was transmitted clearly – the Western Conference Playoffs are going to be spectacular.

Of course, they’d have to be to keep pace with the East. While the champs went to San Antonio and shone, the preseason presumptive champs lost yet another game to a Top Four team in disappointing late-failing fashion. This time, against the Bulls, the Heat had two chances to win the game on the final possession but couldn’t capitalize. For all the early season conjecture about WHO would take the final shot for the Heat, it is ironic that BOTH LeBron and Wade had a chance to play the hero; and failed.

In fact, the Heat are now a league-worst 1 of 16 on shot attempts in the final ten seconds of a tied or one possession game; easily the worst mark in the entire NBA.

The one Heat player who HAS hit a game winner? Not LeBron. Not Wade. Not even Bosh or Mike Miller. Instead, it’s none other than the ‘Sam Cassel ‘Dance’ channeling super-sub, Eddie House…

Today’s Free NBA Picks:

Los Angeles Clippers @ Charlotte Bobcats -1.5

Two weeks ago, the Bobcats looked to be clicking on all cylinders and making an earnest push towards the Eastern Conference playoffs. Now, after dropping all four games on their recent road trip, all in embarrassing fashion, they have some work to do to get back on pace with the Pacers and Sixers for the final two spots in the East.

The Clippers meanwhile, enter the game on a nice two-game win streak, beating both Houston and Denver. The Clips have actually played pretty solid basketball most of the last two months, even though their record doesn’t really reflect it.

Charlotte has won five of their last seven against the Clips, though in fairness, only one of those games featured the Blake Griffin Show. The recent trend in this series falls perfectly in line with the trend for MOST below-average teams; the home team generally wins because bad teams rarely win on the road.

The Clippers are a perfect example. Despite the infusion of excitement Blake Griffin has brought fans across the country, excitement is the only thing he has been bringing – the wins have stayed at home. The Clips are a dismal 5-25 away from Staples.

I like the same corollary holding true tonight in this game. Laying just one and a half points for a home game against a team that’s about .350 on the year is a pretty rare treat. Take advantage of it, lay the slim point and half and take the Bobcats.

Portland Trailblazers +2 @ Orlando Magic

Earlier this season Dwight Howard has a monster game against the Blazers… and they STILL lost. Tonight when the Blazers come to town they will have the good fortune to miss the big guy, as Dwight will be serving a one-game suspension after amassing his sixteenth technical foul of the season.

Portland has been playing very well since the earlier-than-anticipated return of Brandon Roy. They have won nine of twelve overall, though are just 3-3 in their last six contests. Oddly enough, despite taking a few losses lately, they have won five straight on the road – a rarity in the NBA even for elite teams.

The big differentiator comes down to Howard’s absence. With him, the Magic probably win. Honestly, without him, I doubt it. I’m real surprised they are still a two point favorite with their franchise center suspended. Portland is a good basketball team with good, quality size that can score. Without Howard in the middle as a deterrent, look for LaMarcus Aldridge to have a huge game and help the Blazers pick up their sixth straight win away from the Rose Garden.
