NBA Picks and Predictions for March 8th

A scary evening for Chris Paul, thankfully, looks to be no more serious than a mild concussion and likely just a few game absence. However when medical personnel was carrying the stabilized Paul off on a stretcher last night, it was a scarier moment than just thinking about the Payoff run for the Hornets; it was the oddly disquieting feeling of seeing one of the marquee names in the NBA not moving.

Concussions were the buzz word in the NFL this past season as more and more data regarding the long-term effects of concussions comes to light. However, baseball and now the NBA have seen their fair share of high profile stars sidelined for prolonged periods as well. From Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins to Vince Carter of the NBA, more than a few high-profile non-football athletes have seen extended periods on the sidelines with concussions and concussion-like symptoms.

As scary as the site of Chris Paul being carried off, immobilized on a stretcher was, it is safe to say it could have been much, much worse. Here’s hoping Paul is back to his All-Star self, with no lingering effects, much sooner than later.

Today’s Free NBA Picks:

Philadelphia 76’ers @ Indiana Pacers -1.5

On the surface, this is an easy game to overlook, but as the season winds down it is actually an important game as the bottom few teams in the Eastern Conference playoff picture jostle for position.

The Pacers took the last matchup, 111-103 back on Jan 11th, however that game was the first after returning from an Achilles’ injury for Andrew Iguodala. A.I. is healthy now, and two nights ago became the first Sixer to record back-to-back triple doubles in more than a decade. In fact, with their roster finally healthy, Philly has been one of the best teams in the NBA over the past four weeks, going 8-2 in that stretch, including wins over Atlanta, San Antonio and Houston.

Indiana, on the other hand, enters having lost five of their last six, and 7 of 10 overall. The biggest reason for their struggles has been their lack of defense. During their most recent ten game stretch, they held only two teams under 100 points; Washington at home, and Utah the night after the Deron Williams trade.

However, much of Philly’s winning ways were a result of some good home cooking. The Sixers are among the league’s best with a 21-10 home record, yet terrible on the road at just 11-21. The Pacers are very similar; not as great at home (17-14) but a nearly identical road mark.

That stat is probably the most compelling. Philly and Indy are very similar from a talent standpoint. The Sixers have been playing a little better of late, but the home/road splits don’t lie. Gimme the Pacers in Conseco to win and cover.

Golden State Warriors -3.5 @ Cleveland Cavaliers

The Warriors are a dreadful 8-22 away from home this season, including 1-4 on their current seven game road trip. However, nothing cures the road blues like a visit to the LeBron-less Cavaliers. The Cavs are a pathetic 8-23 at home, and just 12-50 overall.

Golden State can score in bunches, which favors them nicely in this contest, as the Cavs reluctantly guard anyone. This is a good night for fantasy owners of Steph Curry and Monte Ellis. The Cavs staggering 106.0 points allowed is ‘bested’ only by the Warriors 106.1. The difference however, is that while the Warriors average an impressive 103.1 points a night, the Cavs muster just 96.0, giving them a league-worst -10 +/- differential.

The Cavs are terrible; the Warriors have a terrible record. There is a big difference. It will be apparent on the court tonight at the Q. Gimme the Warriors to notch a rare road win over the Cavs, and cover the 3.5 point spread.
