NBA Picks and Predictions for March 9th

It’s funny, the Miami Heat are said to “be in major trouble” and “complete disarray” while the Lakers are said to be “coasting” and simply “biding their time until the Playoffs.” The difference between the two cultures and relative attitudes couldn’t be more different.

Do you know what could be almost the same?? Their overall records. Just 1.5 games separates the “hapless Heat” and the smartly “lounging Lakers.” San Antonio, Dallas, Boston and Chicago are putting up unbelievable season and are certainly worthy of the accolades that are coming their way; however overlooking Kobe, LeBron and casts would be a bit premature.

By the end of the season don’t be surprised if the Lakers and Heat have one more thing in common. Conference Championships.

Today’s Free NBA Picks:

Oklahoma City Thunder +1.5 @ Philadelphia 76’ers

As great as Philly has been at home, winning at Indiana, jumping a plane to race home to meet Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder is a pretty tough task. Teams heading HOME for the back half of a back-to-back are generally slightly more successful, but when the visiting team is also vastly superior, it gets a little tricky.

Philadelphia is quickly becoming a #7 seed (or possibly a #6 if they catch the Knicks) that Chicago or Miami want NO part of. The Sixers have rattled off 14 of 18, and looked very good in the process. Their 21-10 home record is also very daunting.

Meanwhile, OKC has just been, well, ‘OK’ over the past month, trading their three game losing streak for a three game winning streak before losing two nights ago to the Memphis Grizzlies. As a matter of fact, based on their so-so 17-14 road record and the 76’ers fantastic home record, it seems like a lot tilts in Philly’s favor.

At the end of the game, it’s sometimes a question of who has more in the tank. If we’ve seen nothing else in the NBA over the past decade it is that inferior teams on the second night of a back-to-back against a good team who did NOT play the night before invariably lose.

I’m bucking the numbers and going with logic – give me the Thunder getting one in Philly.

Los Angeles Clippers @ Boston Celtics -9.5

At first blush, a non-playoff team travelling all the way across the country to take on the reigning Eastern Conference champs looks like a recipe for disaster. Perhaps that’s why the line is so robust at nine points in Boston’s favor.

However, though they have only win twice (both two point wins at home) the Clippers have covered a respectable five times in a row. In fact dating back to 2006, the Clippers have covered 8 of 10 times. Perhaps it is the lacksidasical approach the Clippers have inspired in the opponents for years; fostering a sense of “let’s do just enough to win and save our energy for another day,” but the Clippers have always managed to hang around the Celtics enough to keep things interesting.

The Clippers enter on a three game winning streak, while Boston has won five straight and eight of nine overall. During their eight of nine streak, Boston has won by double-digits only twice; a pair of 14 and 12 point wins over the Nets and Warriors respectively.

The point is, Boston rarely gives away a game they should win, but they rarely crank it up to full tilt in the process, allowing inferior teams to keep the score respectable – and close enough to often cover.

Give me Blake Griffin, but more importantly, give me the 9.5 points.
