We took the L last night as James Harden turned in a regular season performance for the ages in Utah. Not only did he become just the second player ever to score 56 points on fewer than 25 field goal attempts, he also did it on the road against one of the more well-respected defensive teams in the NBA. I thought Houston would win, but I definitely didn’t see them hanging 137 on the Jazz last night. Impressive stuff.
The Rockets moved to 8-3 and did open the season with that win in Golden State, so I suppose it is impossible NOT to consider them a contender, but I still have a strong supposition that everyone is just playing for second. The Warriors will try to reinforce that belief tonight, and now that they are back to playing like their old selves, the lines are back to their old selves as well. If you like them hosting Miami tonight, you have to swallow a whopping 16.5 points to make that bet official…
Today’s NBA Pick:
Brooklyn Nets at Phoenix Suns -1.5
It’s a light slate tonight of NBA action, with just the aforementioned Warriors game, the Celtics looking to win their ninth straight game in Atlanta, and tonight’s featured pick, the glamorous Nets v/ Suns tilt.
On paper, the Nets and Suns look similar; two of the worst teams in the perspective conferences who have actually grabbed enough wins early to look like competitive teams. This should be a really good game, right? Well, the records may be similar, but the Suns have a bigger edge than the 1.5 spread indicates. Brooklyn’s win came early, and the Cavaliers win looks a lot less impressive after the Cavs lo
st games to the Knicks, Pacers and yesterday’s home debacle against hapless Atlanta. The Nets are 0-4 SU on the road this season and have started regressing back to the expected mean, dropping four of their last five games ATS as well.
Meanwhile, Phoenix’s first three games were so epically bad that they resulted in the quick hook of head coach Earl Watson. Since his dismissal, the Suns are actually a pretty decent basketball team, winning four of their last six games, and are 5-2 ATS since the coaching move.
It’s a small price to pay to get the better team at home at just -1.5. I imagine the line will widen throughout the day, and I’m cool up to -3.5 or so, but will happily clock in now at -1.5
Today’s NBA Pick: PHOENIX SUNS -1.5
