The Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers meet in a battle of powerhouses at the Staples Center. Neither team looked like powerhouses in their season openers, though. Both were losers, as the Suns fell behind and never recovered against the Denver Nuggets in the second-half.
The Suns allowed the Nuggets to go on a small run at the end of the second-half to pull within 6 points. It carried over into the 3rd quarter, as the Nuggets scored 34 points to the Suns’ 24 points. The Suns’ shooters had little to offer in the final frame, with the Nuggets pulling away for a 110-98 win. They scored just 16 points in the 4th.

Phoenix was not the only team in this game that struggled on opening night. The Lakers looked slow and sloppy in a 121-114 loss against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. The first game with Russell Westbrook aboard at the Staples Center didn’t go according to plan.
Westbrook didn’t look like he belonged on the same floor as Lebron James and Anthony Davis. James scored 34 points and recorded 11 rebounds, while AD had a big game as well with 33 points and 11 boards. The supporting cast was not there, though, as Westbrook chipped in with just 8 points.
The next highest scorer behind Lebron and AD was Carmelo Anthony with 9 points off the bench. I have some confidence in Westbrook going when the Lakers generate some chemistry with him, though. It’s unlikely that he won’t figure it out and get into a groove.
Lakers’ fans aren’t going to be patient with this team in 2021-22. The organization spent a lot of money putting together this Big 3 of Lebron, AD, and Westbrook. If the results aren’t there, then the faithful Laker supporters are going to let them hear it. Are the Suns or Lakers going to bounce back after dropping their openers? Head below for our free Suns vs. Lakers pick on October 22, 2021.

Suns vs. Lakers Prediction:
The Suns are looking for better in this one after failing to hit triple digits against the Nuggets. Mikal Bridges was the leading-scorer with 16 points, while Devin Booker had a disappointing showing with 12 points. The Suns needed Booker to erupt in that contest, and he failed to come up big in the opener.
Don’t worry, though, Booker is going to be fine. He’s going to have games where he goes off and defenses can’t do anything about it. After a sloppy performance in the Lakers’ season opener, Booker and the Suns are probably going to be in tough. The Lakers have defense, but that wasn’t present versus the Warriors.
The Lakers allowed 106.8 points per game for the best in the Western Conference last year. While Westbrook is known for his scoring, adding him to the lineup can only help their defense. At least for one night, we didn’t see the same lockdown unit that frustrated offenses. It’s best not to overreact too much to one game.
Phoenix Suns vs. LA Lakers Betting Trends:
- 0-5 ATS in their previous five games
- 20-9 ATS in their previous 29 games after failing to cover the spread
- 7-3 ATS in their previous ten games after losing by at least 10 points
- 8-3 ATS in their previous 11 games on one day rest
- 2-4 ATS in their previous six games
- 7-1 ATS in their previous eight games on a Friday
- 1-7 ATS in their previous eight games as a favorite at home
- 1-4 ATS in their previous five games
- UNDER is 6-0 in their previous six games on a Friday
This should be a good one between the Suns and Lakers. It’s the game of the night and likely going to be the most watched event. The Suns are going to put up a big fight in this one, but back at home for the second consecutive game, I expect the Lakers to come up with a better performance. The defense which was non-existent in the opener should show up in this one. I like the Lakers to pull away for a 113-105 win or thereabout.
