The big news in the NBA yesterday was the announcement that Kobe Bryant will be returning to action Sunday night for the Los Angeles Lakers. Perhaps in one last “audition” to show him they are worthy of being passed to, his teammates played big last night, going on the road to push their record to 10-9. That’s would put them fourth in the Eastern Conference. They are currently 10th in the West. Yep, it’s going to be that kind of year.
Meanwhile, we got back to our NBA winning ways with Phoenix’s relatively easy cover last night against Toronto. Let’s try to keep it up tonight with a pair of NBA picks.
Today’s free picks:
Denver Nuggets -6.5 at Philadelphia 76’ers (Total:
The Philly free-fall was briefly stemmed with the double overtime home win over the Magic last week, but they have still dropped eight of their last ten games overall. Meanwhile, Denver, after a sluggish start, has gotten themselves right back into the massive Western Conference playoff logjam stringing together seven wins in ten games.
However, Denver has dropped two in a row, both on the road to sub-.500 teams and tonight will be playing their fourth road game in five nights. The played last night in Boston, and played poorly, and now tonight is the back-end of their second back to back this week.
That’s a lot for any team to handle. TO be laying 6.5 on the road with that kind of a schedule is insane. Even if for some reason they DO cover the spread, it would be nearly crazy to bet on it happening. It would be an absolute statistical anomaly in the NBA. I’m not going to try and get cute tonight. Take Philly and the points.
Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls -4
Last week’s game against Miami was a wake-up call for the league and me as well; the Bulls are STILL a very formidable opponent at home. They are 6-1 at the united Center, and their only loss was a triple-overtime thriller against New Orleans. They have beaten GOOD teams at home as well, like the Heat and Pacers – each in blowout fashion.
Chicago’s record is a little distorting because of how many more road games they have played, and let’s be honest, how awkward their offense looked while Derrick Rose was trying to work his way back into rhythm. They aren’t as talented without him, but they are a little more efficient and every bit as tough defensively.
I thought this line would be around 5.5. Right now I can get the Bulls laying only four and it feels like a steal. Give me Chicago continuing their home dominance.
