Pistons vs. Heat Pick NBA – March 29th

We notched another NBA win, our fourth in five games, thanks to the Jazz not only covering but beating the Thunder straight-up last night in Utah. The game itself wasn’t that memorable, but the postgame snarkiness was about as good as it gets in the NBA. Enes Kanter had some less-than-flattering things to say about his former organization prior to the game and it is fair to say his ex-teammates and the fans (who booed relentlessly) didn’t take kindly to the comments. After winning the game and asked about Kanter’s comments, Trevor Booker replied, “He did what he always does. He got his stats. He didn’t defend. He took an L.”

That’s simply awesome. Cold and accurate. Well played Trevor Booker. Well played.

Meanwhile, the Warriors won their sixtieth game and clinched the top overall seed in the Western Conference with two weeks to spare. It will be interesting to see how rookie coach Steve Kerr balances the desire to rest and be healthy with the notion of staying sharp and entering the postseason playing dominant basketball. For now, with Portland and Memphis taking some losses, Houston being, well, Houston and Dallas and the Clippers showing vulnerability all season long, it’s hard to take anyone other than the Spurs as a legitimate scare for the Warriors, and the seeding currently aligns to keep the separate until the Western Conference Finals.

Let’s see if we can cap off a nice week with another winner.

Today’s Free Pick:

Detroit Pistons at Miami Heat -3

The Heat return home looking to keep their playoff position secure after a disappointing road trip in which they dropped three of four and averaged just 85.8 points a game in the process. It hasn’t been a pretty season overall for Miami, but fortunately the bottom of the East is so mediocre, that with just a little lean through the finish they could avoid the Lottery and the disaster it would mean to their fans who actually thought (and I agreed) they could carry on sans LeBron much better than they have.

Both teams could be a little shorthanded and undersized tonight with Greg Monroe and Hassan Whiteside both likely out of the contest. It means it may not be a great game to watch, but with each team’s shortcoming negated, I’ll go with Dwyane Wade to continue his excellent play. He has averaged 28.7 ppg over his last eight games.

Getting a visit from Detroit isn’t a bad recipe for success. The Pistons are just 13-23 on the road this season. They have won back-to-back road games over Orlando and Boston, but had lost six straight before that. Meanwhile, Miami enters with some lousy momentum, but heading home should cure it. They have won four straight home games including a win over Cleveland in a possible opening round playoff preview.

I’ll take the Heat at home. I’m surprised they are only three point faves tonight, but am happy to take advantage of an advantageous line.
