Sacramento Kings vs. Portland Trail Blazers Pick – NBA October 20, 2021

The Sacramento Kings and Portland Trail Blazers tip-off the 2021-22 season at the Moda Center. The Trail Blazers went into last season with a lot of expectations. You would have been able to find people that had the Trail Blazers going into the NBA Finals. They were one of the trendy picks in the NBA.

However, whenever there are trendy picks, there are sure to be big letdowns. The Trail Blazers were a letdown. They finished with a record of 42-30 and settled for sixth in the Western Conference. Certainly it wasn’t bad, but below what many people predicted, though.

The Trail Blazers were bounced from the playoffs following a 4-2 series loss against the Denver Nuggets. An early exit in the playoffs isn’t what Damian Lillard had in mind. Lillard is a great player, but he’s never going to get the full respect he deserves before winning an NBA Championship.

Lillard is going to need more help if that’s going to happen. With all of these super teams coming together, the Trail Blazers aren’t going to get through the West without Lillard getting a running mate better than CJ McCollum. That’s no disrespect to McCollum who is a good player, just not a guy that joins Lillard to create a superteam.

The Toronto Raptors added Kawhi Leonard to get over the hump after stalling out in the playoffs regularly. The Blazers are kind of where the Raptors were with Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. Good, but not good enough to compete. Where do the Sacramento Kings stand in 2021-22?

I will say that the Kings are going to be a fun team to watch. There is talent here and they’re likely going to be underrated often this season. The big driving force this season has to be the development of Tyrese Haliburton. If Haliburton gets to the next level, then the Kings could be a surprise.

Even if the Kings don’t win or cover tonight, I wouldn’t be quick to ignore them. Along with Halliburton, their first overall selection in Davion Mitchell is another young talent that could have a big impact on the Kings. It’s easy to see why the Kings could be a decent team when you factor in De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield. Head below for our free Kings vs. Trail Blazers pick on October 20, 2021.

Kings vs. Trail Blazers Prediction:

The Kings added center Tristan Thompson to the mix for this season. Thompson is what he is, but he’s a big body that should help the Kings in the paint. It was only two years ago that Thompson recorded a career-high 12 points per game. He’s shot above 50% from the field in seven straight years.

Richaun Holmes didn’t end up leaving the Kings after an offseason of speculation. He’s the No. 1 center on the Kings, and then they can go to Thompson in a reserve role. I think that’s a pretty good combo for the Kings. Holmes is one of the more underrated centers in the NBA.

He is coming off a career season in 2020. Holmes notched 14.2 points per game and an impressive 63.7% from the field. He’s only gotten better with age, and the 28-year-old is going to have some help behind him with Thompson. The team had no problem offensively last season, it was their defensive woes that hurt them.

The Kings scored 113.7 points per game, but allowed 117.7 points per game. That was too many points. If they find some defense this season, the Kings are not going to be bad at all, and will improve on their 31-41 campaign a season ago.

Sacramento Kings vs. Portland Trail Blazers Betting Trends:

  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games
  • 4-8 ATS in their previous 12 games versus the Trail Blazers
  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games versus the Western Conference
  • 8-1 ATS in their previous nine games on the road
  • 9-3 ATS in their previous 12 games as an underdog

Trail Blazers

  • 3-8 ATS in their previous 11 games as a favorite in Portland
  • 1-4 ATS in their previous five games
  • OVER is 6-1 in their previous seven games
  • OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games in Portland

The Trail Blazers averaged 116.1 points and allowed 114.3 points per game last season. Their defense was not up to par to do enough damage to compete with the elite teams.

Again, there is another gear missing from the Blazers. As good as the role players are on this team, they need more than Norman Powell and CJ McCollum. Yeah, I know Jusuf Nurkic is a fine player as well, but he’s just that. The Kings are going to be a team to keep tabs on this season.

They’re not going to be a top tier team by any stretch, but if Haliburton shows big improvement, then the Kings might be able to jump up into the playoff race. I would have this spread at 3 or 3.5 for the Blazers, so the Kings open the season with some value.
