San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavericks Pick – NBA March 10, 2021

The NBA is back on Wednesday night following the All-Star break. Team Lebron pulled away for an easy 170-150 win on Sunday. I’m not big into All-Star games, so didn’t pay all that much attention to the game besides keeping an eye on it periodically. There are only two games on Wednesday to get the next phase of the regular season underway.

In the first of two games, the Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies are scheduled to meet at the FedExForum. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST. The San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks will get going in Texas at the American Airlines Center 30 minutes later.

This rivalry matchup should be an entertaining contest in Dallas. The Spurs and Mavericks both had their moments in the first-half of the season, but played like second-tier clubs. The Spurs head into tonight with a record of 18-14, while the Mavericks are in a similar position at 18-16 on the season.

The Mavericks head into tonight off a 87-78 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 3. With Luka Doncic out of the lineup, the Mavericks went into full defensive mode against an anemic OKC offense. They adapted with Doncic out of the lineup, and played that game beautifully against a team they were aware can’t score.

Prior to that victory, the Mavs also beat the Brooklyn Nets, 115-98, and the Orlando Magic, 130-124. The Nets were without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in that game, but it was still a strong victory for the Mavericks. Conversely, the Spurs are coming off an ugly win against the Thunder, 107-102. The Thunder’s ugly offense was able to find enough room to beat the Spurs straight up as a 7-point underdog.

LaMarcus Aldridge was on the injury report recently with an illness, but is clear to play on Wednesday night against the Mavericks. Doncic missed the Mavericks’ previous game, though is expected to play in the first game back after the All-Star break. He missed the All-Star festivities, but was at least able to rest up and get freshened up. Head below for our free Spurs vs. Mavericks pick on March 10, 2021.

Spurs vs. Mavericks Prediction:

The Spurs and Mavericks met on January 22 in a game that developed into an entertaining matchup. The Mavericks won as 2-point favorites on the road by a score of 122-117. Doncic had a big performance, as he went off for 36 points, while Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. chipped in with 21 points each. Demar DeRozan and Aldridge carried the load for the Spurs, with 29 points for DeRozan and 26 for Aldridge. With Aldridge cleared to play, the Spurs get a big boost offensively with his presence on the court.

By today’s standards, the Spurs’ offense has been average, but Aldridge missed time this season. The Spurs averaged 111 points per game for 22nd in the NBA. I suspect that the Spurs should be able to record around 115 points or so against a Dallas defense that is allowing an average of 112.3 points per game. That’s good for only 18th in the league.

It took the Mavericks’ offense a minute to get up to speed this season. Much of that can be attributed to an early Porzingis injury that held him out of several games. Then upon his return, it took him a couple of weeks to shake off the rust. However, Porzingis is back in fine form, and has scored an average of 20.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. The Mavericks are 18th in the NBA with 111.8 points scored per game.

With Porzingis and Doncic both active, the Mavericks are going beyond that season average, though. The total looks a few points too short here. I suspect we see both teams record around 115 points, which would put the final score in the upper 220’s to 230. When both squads had their main pieces playing together, their offenses looked better than their season average numbers indicate. And even then, if they were to score and concede around their season averages, that would put the final score close to the total. I like the OVER in a 119-113 or 116-111 game.
