San Antonio Spurs vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Pick – NBA April 7, 2022

The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves are scheduled to meet at the Target Center in Minnesota on Thursday night. The Spurs are coming off a notable win at Denver for a 116-97 win as a 9-point underdog.

With the win and Lakers’ loss, the Spurs were partially responsible for officially knocking the Lakers out of the play-in picture. The Spurs have a three-game advantage over the Lakers with three games left in the regular season.

That’s enough for the Spurs to ensure a final play-in spot in the tournament. They can improve to ninth over the New Orleans Pelicans with a strong finish. The Spurs are currently a game behind the Pelicans going into tonight.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are most likely to finish seventh and go to the play-in. There is still a chance the Timberwolves catch the Denver Nuggets for the sixth seed and skip the play-in tournament.

They are coming off a 132-114 loss to the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. This after a 136-130 win over the Nuggets and 139-132 over the Houston Rockets.

If it isn’t evident enough, the Timberwolves will have to find some defensive energy if they’re going to have success in the playoffs. This is probably something for next season to address.

Just getting to the playoffs after being a lottery team not too long ago is an accomplishment. They are entering tonight at 45-35 and playing with house money in this one.

Spurs vs. Timberwolves Prediction:

The Timberwolves have nothing to lose in the postseason. They are already playing with house money after such a successful regular season.

When the Timberwolves get serious about playing defense, perhaps in a year or two, that’s when they’re going to be dangerous. Right now, they don’t have the talent to put up much resistance.

It’s going to be a problem in the playoffs unless they plan on scoring more than 125 points every game. The Timberwolves have been getting ravished recently on the defensive floor.

They have allowed 130.6 points per game and a 54.3% field goal percentage in their last five outings. They’re far from that bad overall, but still a need for improvement in the coming years.

Minnesota is 24th, with 113.1 points allowed per game. Fortunately, the Timberwolves have scored the most points with 115.8 a game, but defense is required for playoff basketball.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Betting Trends:

  • 4-0 ATS in their previous four games as an underdog
  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six games after a win
  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games on the road
  • 9-3 ATS in their previous 12 games on the road versus a team with a winning percentage better than 60%
  • 4-0 ATS in their previous four games after a win by double digits
  • 1-4 ATS in their previous five games
  • 2-5 ATS in their previous seven games on one-day rest
  • 10-4 ATS in their previous 14 games on a Thursday
  • 7-2 ATS in their previous nine games at home
  • OVER is 24-9 in their previous 33 games as a betting favorite

The Spurs have been without Dejounte Murray recently, but Gregg Popovich has done a nice job with this defense. They were all over the place for most of this season. However, the Spurs have stepped it up down the stretch.

The Spurs have conceded 108 points or less in five of their last eight. Three of those contests included less than 100 points allowed versus the Spurs. Their most recent attempt was one of their best, with a 116-97 win over the Nuggets.

There’s still talent on the Spurs despite no Murray. Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson stepped up nicely with a combined 44 points without Murray on the floor. Popovich is doing what he does best at the moment and has the Spurs playing as a team.

This looks like too many points. The Spurs are playing determined basketball and likely stay close versus a bad Minnesota defense.

They know what they’ll be playing the Pelicans in the play-in, but staying on track and maintaining their recent form is important. Taking 7.5 points looks like the best bet in Minnesota.
