We notched an easy NBA winner last night as the Pacers won comfortably at home against the LeBron-less Cavaliers. I quick note about the line I posted yesterday as well. I write, generally, early in the morning. Around 2pm, they officially scratched LeBron from the lineup, so the line went from the +4 to +5 range to -1 to -2 IMMEDIATELY. Which make a lot of sense. It is a totally different team (duh) without the best player in the World in uniform.
The thing that didn’t make sense is that the Pacers only had to lay at home against LeBron-less Cavs who were on the backend of a back-to-back and on the road… pretty easy money, right?
I imagine this won’t be the last time I write a similar intro this season. I love the NBA. No, correction, I LOVE the NBA. And I am having a very profitable season to date at 15-8 ATS. But this trend of superstars being benched for non-injury reasons can be a REAL headache. If I were on the other side of yesterday’s line, and was laying five on the Cavs, I’d have been rather annoyed.
Just a reminder: keep an eye on the news throughout the day, especially if you are making a sizeable wager. The DNP-no reason’s aren’t going away, and it makes our job even more challenging (though it can also work in our favor – I had a sneaking suspicion LeBron would be limited minutes-wise given the trend on back-to-backs with star players, so I JUMPED on Indy +5 early).
Let’s keep it rolling!

Today’s Free Pick:
Philadelphia 76’ers at Minnesota Timberwolves -11
If you have been thinking, man this has been a strange year; Cubbies, politics, global issues – lots of surprises – then you might want to avoid tonight’s TNT listing. Because if any of those events seemed surprising, TNT nationally televising a game between the Sixers and Timberwolves might indeed be a sign of the Apocalypse. These two long-time doormats feature some of the most dazzling arrays of young talent anywhere in the sport, and they finally get a national showcase to display it tonight.
It should be a fun game.
It might not also be a ‘good’ game. These two have combined for just five wins this season and Philly is on the backend of a back-to-back. Interestingly, Joel Embiid sat last night as part of ‘the process’ of working him back from injury is to avoid back-to-backs, making it an obvious media-savvy move to have him available for tonight’s showcase. Bravo, Sixers! Unconventional? Sure. But good for the reputation and image of the franchise to have your best foot forward tonight? Absolutely.
It is STILL a second game in two nights, but I think the young Sixers will be ready to roll tonight. This game will mean SO SO much to them, and they have a fresh Embiid who is the RUNAWAY Rookie of the Year right now, and it isn’t even CLOSE. The Sixers still have some backcourt issues and will struggle defending Wiggins tonight, but even is Wiggins drops 35, the Sixers are still getting a big fat eleven points.
I like Minnesota, and have written often about how much better all their stats are compared to their won/loss record. But laying eleven? That feels pretty severe.
I’ll take the Sixers and the double-digit points.
