The Spurs went on the road and handled their business at Washington giving us the easy cover and pushing our record at thesportsgeek.com to 14-7-2 ATS for the NBA season. It’s been a pretty great start, but not quite as great as the start the Oklahoma City Thunder enjoyed last night. The Thunder became just the fifth team in the modern shot clock era to hold a 40+ point lead at halftime, and eventually pushed their lead over the Charlotte Bobcats to 53 points in the third quarter before clearing the bench and cruising to a 47 point victory.
Charlotte has made huge positive strides this season. Let’s hope yesterday’s debacle was just a one-off and not a harbinger of future unraveling….
Let’s move on to tonight’s NBA free pick:
Phoenix Suns at Cleveland Cavaliers +2.5 (Total: 202)
The improvement in Cleveland might still be a year away. The Cavs are off to a 3-11 start and haven’t looked very impressive. Unlike a few other teams who are floundering, the Wizards namely, Cleveland isn’t missing a significant player to injury. They appear to be just this mediocre.
So much for them winning a championship before Lebron. At this point, I think they’d settle for making the playoffs before Lebron has a fistful of rings.
In Cleveland’s defense, a ridiculous eight of their last nine games have been on the road (all losses) and nearly all of them have been against good opponents. They have lost to Brooklyn, Oklahoma City, Miami, and Memphis; the four top teams in the NBA. They also have a two-point loss at Phoenix. If they can replicate the same effort tonight, it’s a cover.
Phoenix has been dreadful on the road as well. They are just 1-4 on the road and haven’t been particularly competitive in most of them. Position by position these two teams aren’t that different. Both have serviceable big men who make hustle plays and can get a few buckets. Cleveland has a better point guard in Kyrie Irving, though Goran Dragic has played well, and they are even in most other positions.
Cleveland is a better defensive team as well, Phoenix has given up a league-worst 103.3 points per game, which bodes well for the Cavs who will be very excited to finally be at home against a beatable opponent. I expect them to play well tonight and like them straight up, as well as getting the 2.5 points.
Free Pick: Cleveland Cavs +2.5
