It goes without saying his importance to this team. Doncic is capable of winning a series on his shoulders, but the Mavericks will have to do it without him, at least likely again tonight. His status for Game 2 doesn’t look the best, so don’t depend on him seeing the floor.
The Jazz looked fine in Game 1. They didn’t put out their best effort in a game without Doncic active. Having said that, we’ve been saying this against the Jazz often this season. Something has been holding them back in the 2021-22 campaign.
Utah finished with a record of 49-33 and fifth in the Western Conference. This was after beating the Phoenix Suns by a game to win the West last year.
The Jazz are good, but they’ve lacked the extra gear late in games to put them ahead of the best teams in the NBA. Despite the absence of Doncic, don’t give up on the Mavericks yet.
The Mavericks will be asked to have a determined team effort against the Jazz tonight. They need it or risk getting into a hole that would be tough to get out of without Doncic.

Jazz vs. Mavericks Prediction:
The Mavericks need a total team effort against the Jazz tonight. The good news for the Mavericks is that they showed it’s possible to slow the Jazz down with their defense.
Without Doncic on the floor, the Mavericks still showed up with a strong defensive performance. Utah scored just 45 points in the first half in Game 1.
Jason Kidd has the Jazz offense figured out and now they need a lift offensively. The quality effort on defense doesn’t come as too much of a surprise.
Dallas is the second-best team in the NBA with 104.7 points against per game. They are tough on the perimeter and don’t allow teams to operate freely beyond the arc.
Opponents shot just 34% from three against the Mavericks this season. The Mavericks held up nicely in Game 1, as the Jazz struggled to find an offensive rhythm.
Expect the Mavericks’ defense to come up with a game filled with plenty of pressure. If they’re motivated in Game 2, which they should be at home, the Mavs should force the Jazz into errors.
Utah Jazz vs. Dallas Mavericks Betting Trends:
Jazz
- 3-1-1 ATS in their previous five games
- 1-7 ATS in their previous eight games on a one-day break
- 3-9 ATS in their previous 12 games as a favorite on the road
- 1-4-1 ATS in their previous six games versus a team with a winning percentage better than 60%
- 1-5 ATS in their previous six games versus the Mavericks
Mavericks
- 4-1 ATS in their previous five games as an underdog at home
- 6-2 ATS in their previous eight games
- 16-6 ATS in their previous 22 games after failing to cover the spread
- 11-4 ATS in their previous 15 games versus a team with a winning record
- 5-1 ATS in their previous six games on a Monday
The Mavericks should have an extra step kick in their step tonight in Game 2. They learned from the first game that it’s possible to hang around and be competitive against the Jazz without Doncic.
Utah looked equally as strong defensively in Game 1. However, this isn’t the same lockdown defense from last year in the regular season. The Jazz are 10th in the league with 107.6 points allowed per game.
I’m going to side with the Mavericks to come out firing in Game 2. Expect them to play with a chip on their shoulders and something to prove at home in this one. The Mavericks getting points at home in Game 2 looks like good value.
If the oddsmakers thought this was going to be another Jazz game following a 6-point win, this spread probably wouldn’t have been 5 points. Doncic or no Doncic, the Mavs should be the hungrier team tonight.
