Utah Jazz vs. Portland Trail Blazers Pick – NBA December 29, 2021

The Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers are expected to tip-off at the Moda Center in Portland tonight. Cancellations have to be expected in this era of NBA basketball as well.

I had a play on the Spurs, looking to take advantage of the Miami Heat Covid situation, but that game was called off. Attempting to keep up with the players in and out these days is a talent in itself.

College football is laughable with not only Covid, but opt-outs, transfers, and injuries. Hopefully, this Covid wave comes and goes quickly, and we can get back to some normalcy in sports.

The NBA is doing their best to keep the league going, with most teams having to give 10-day contracts to players that were sitting at home on the bench.

It’s a great opportunity for them, but tough on teams trying to put a lineup on the floor to win games. The Utah Jazz has largely been able to avoid putting players in Covid protocol.

The injury bug has hit some key players, most recently Donovan Mitchell, who is dealing with a bad back. He was questionable to play before being ruled out tonight, so this doesn’t look like a long-term issue.

The Covid list is fairly long for the Blazers going into tonight. There are six players currently in health and safety protocol, with CJ McCollum absent with a collapsed lung.

Jusuf Nurkic is the biggest name on the Covid list for the Trail Blazers. He and Cody Zeller joined the healthy and safety list a couple of days ago and will be unavailable tonight.

Jazz vs. Trail Blazers Prediction:

The Jazz have to like to see that Jusuf Nurkic is going to be absent on Wednesday night. That opens up the paint for Rudy Gobert to have a big night at the rim.

Gobert is tough to handle as it is, but without Nurkic, expect the Jazz to feed Robert often. He goes into this one with 15.4 points and 14.9 rebounds per game.

Look for Gobert to collect most loose balls that come around him. The Jazz are first in the league on the offensive boards and second-best on the defensive boards.

They are great on the boards and can pile up the points quickly. Utah is leading the NBA with 115.8 points per game. They are shooting an impressive 47.7% from the field.

Portland has struggled to defend from outside, as teams are shooting 37.5% from three versus the Blazers. They are 30th on defense in that regard.

Now they lose an interior defender in Nurk. If the Jazz are interested, they should be able to score from everywhere on the floor in Portland.

Utah Jazz vs. Portland Trail Blazers Betting Trends:

  • 0-6 ATS in their previous six games
  • 0-6 ATS in their previous six games as a betting favorite
  • 0-5 ATS in their previous five games after failing to cover the spread
  • 8-3 ATS in their previous 11 games on a Wednesday
  • OVER is 17-7 in their previous 24 games at Portland

Trail Blazers

  • 1-7 ATS in their previous eight games at Portland
  • 2-10 ATS in their previous 12 games as an underdog
  • 4-11 ATS in their previous 15 games
  • 1-4 ATS in their previous five games after a loss
  • 2-6-1 ATS in their previous nine games versus a team with a winning record

Overall, the Blazers are 26th in the league with 111.7 points against per game. In their last five attempts, Portland has conceded 114.4 points per game.

With a shorthanded Blazers team on the floor tonight, they should have lots of issues stopping the Jazz tonight. Utah has put in 117.5 points per game over their previous four outings.

Across their last ten games, the Jazz have recorded 120 points per game. They might be able to eclipse 120 points. The Mavericks scored 132 points on the Blazers without Nurkic in the lineup.

I don’t know about 132 points, but the Jazz should score in this one. Damian Lillard will be asked to do everything, though the depth of the Jazz will be too much to overcome. I like Utah to win and cover.
