Utah Jazz vs. San Antonio Spurs Pick – NBA December 27, 2021

The Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs have a date at the AT&T Center in Texas on Monday night. Utah is on the road for a couple of attempts after a 120-116 win over the Dallas Mavericks at home on Christmas Day.

That was a closer final than the oddsmakers were anticipating at Vivint Arena. The Jazz were double-digit favorites but tied into the 4th quarter and needed to edge the Mavericks out in the final minutes.

Donovan Mitchell had a big performance, as he put in 33 points to lead the Jazz in scoring. Bojan Bogdanovic had a positive showing with 25 points on the board.

Thanks to their effort, the Jazz are up to 23-9 with a 3.5-game deficit behind the Golden State Warriors. They’re certainly a contender, but I think many expect them to flame out in the playoffs.

The Jazz are well-balanced enough that they can’t be ignored, though. They can play the defensive or offensive floor and adapt to their opponent. Utah takes on a confident Spurs team that will look to run at home tonight.

San Antonio has been playing Gregg Popovich basketball lately and has won four of their previous five attempts. They go into this one on a three-game winning streak, including a 144-109 win over the Detroit Pistons last night.

The Spurs also easily handled the Clippers and Lakers, 116-92 and 138-110. They are looking to erase a slow start this season. Despite recent success, the Spurs are 14-18 and have work to do if they go to the playoffs.

They were fine without Dejounte Murray versus a Covid-riddled Pistons squad, but that could look much different against a Covid-free Jazz team tonight. Although, Donovan Mitchell is dealing with a bad back and is unavailable for the Jazz.

Murray is in health and safety protocol against one of only three teams in the NBA that doesn’t have a player on the Covid list. Head below for our free Jazz vs. Spurs pick on December 27, 2021.

Jazz vs. Spurs Prediction:

The Utah Jazz will not have the services of Donovan Mitchell in San Antonio tonight. The good news for the Jazz is that we’ve seen them succeed without Mitchell on the floor in the past.

They are still a very good team that can run their offense and defense without one starter. The Spurs without Dejounte Murray, though?

The offense runs through Murray, and I’m not as confident in the Spurs doing what they’d like without him. Murray has scored 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

His production will be missed against an aggressive defense like the Jazz. You might be thinking that the Spurs were fine against the Pistons.

Okay, but look at the state of the Pistons right now. They’re not healthy, and even if they were, the Pistons are a different challenge than the Jazz.

Utah is seventh in the NBA with 105.7 points per game. Opponents are shooting 44.2% and 32.8% from three against the Jazz. Could they be better?

I think if they’re going to beat the Suns and Warriors, they will have to be. Having said that, the Jazz are well above average defensively. They just won’t be able to make any mistakes in the postseason against top talent.

Utah Jazz vs. San Antonio Spurs Betting Trends:

Jazz

  • 6-2 ATS in their previous eight games versus a team with a losing home record
  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six games versus the Spurs
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games versus the Spurs
  • 11-2 overall in their previous 13 games
  • OVER is 13-5 in their previous 18 games

Spurs

  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games
  • 11-4 ATS in their previous 15 games
  • 3-12 overall in their previous 15 games versus the Northwest Division
  • 1-5 ATS in their previous six games versus the Jazz
  • OVER is 14-5 in their previous 19 games versus the Jazz

Utah is first in the league with 116 points per game. They are second-best in the league, with a field goal percentage of 47.7%. The presence of Rudy Gobert allows the Jazz to attack from the inside or outside.

While I like Jakob Poeltl, Gobert should have his way of navigating around him tonight. Expect him to have a big game around the rim in this one. Note that the Spurs can score, though their defense needs improvement.

Popovich knows he has a contender if the defense would follow. However, that isn’t the reality for the Spurs, as they’ve conceded 110 points per game for 23rd in the NBA.

At home in San Antonio, that number goes up to 113.4 points per game. Teams are shooting a healthy 35.9% from three versus the Spurs.

If Murray was healthy to go tonight, then I’d be looking at the Spurs. In fact, it’d be a fairly strong play at +7. However, his absence changes a lot for the Spurs.

The Jazz should manage much better without Mitchell than the Spurs without Murray tonight. It likely won’t be there when the Spurs need the extra gear versus the Jazz defense.

In a game, I see the Jazz pulling ahead for a 10 or 12-point win, laying 7 points at San Antonio looks bettable in this spot.
