49ers Chargers Spread Betting Line and Predictions Week 15

Both the San Francisco 49’ers and the San Diego Chargers came out of week 14 with huge divisional wins. The Niners beat the Seahawks 40-21 in San Fran and the Chargers beat the Chiefs 31-0 in San Diego. Both teams now sit 1 game back of the division lead, making this Thursday’s matchup between the Niners and Chargers from San Diego a very important and anticipated game for both teams.

San Fran QB Alex Smith returned to the lineup after a 5 game absence to lead the Niners to a lopsided win over the Seahawks. Smith showed why he had great potential for so many years in the league, going 17/27 for 255 yards, 3 TDs and 0 INTs. Brian Westbrook showed that he can still be an effective RB with 100 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown, and the Niners defense stepped up to pick off Matt Hasselbeck 4 times. But the Niners problem all year has been consistency. Since their 0-5 start, they’ve gone W L W W L W L W. They have the talent to be the best team in their division but head coach Mike Singletary hasn’t gotten the most out his players this year. The loss of Frank Gore 2 weeks ago against the Cardinals is a big blow, and although Westbrook is an effective back, his age prevents San Fran from leaning on him. Rookie Anthony Dixon got the bulk of the carries last week with 16 vs. Westbrook’s 9. Alex Smith was able to do damage vs. the 30th ranked pass defense in Seattle, but it’ll be a difference story this week against a Chargers team that ranks in the top 3 in total defense.

San Diego are 1st in yards allowed and 1st in passing yards allowed in the league, giving up a ridiculous 173.4 per contest. This number is more impressive when considering the fact they’ve played Indi, Houston, New England and Denver in 4 of the last 7 weeks. They all rank in the top 10 in passing yards.

After a poor start to the season, SD have won 4 of their last 5, including an impressive win in Indianapolis, but a bad loss to Oakland and losses to the Rams and Seahawks have put them at 7-6 instead of 10-3 where they probably should be given their rankings. Offensively their just as good as they are defensively. They are top 3 in points, yards, and passing yards, and even without a consistent running game, Philip Rivers is playing at his usual elite level. It’s going to be very hard for the Niners to stop him at home this week in such an important game, and the spread indicates that San Diego are the better team in the better situation.

Niners vs. Chargers Prediction for Week 15 Betting:

Spread Prediction (Top Play): Although this is an NFC vs. AFC matchup, the Niners only have to travel 500 miles down to Qualcomm Stadium. This won’t feel like much of an away game for them, and the Niners’ recent record vs. the Chargers proves how well they have played them in the past. The Niners are 6-2 straight up in its last 8 vs. San Diego, and although the Chargers have been playing well of late, they still have some key injuries on offense. Antonio Gates is doubtful for Thursday’s game, and Vincent Jackson is still a step or two behind. Jackson was targeted 3 times vs. the Chiefs, and on a short week of practice I don’t expect anything spectacular from him. San Fran played the Eagles, Saints and Falcons very close, losing by a combined 8 points and I like them to cover this spread this week.

Top Play Prediction = San Francisco +10.

Game Total Prediction: The Niners are hardly an offensive powerhouse. Their problem all year has been scoring points and getting consistent play from their Quarterback. Their defense is average but against the run they’re in the top 10. The Under has hit in 6 of their last 9 games, and their defense is good enough to hold keep the Chargers at bay. San Diego are tops in offense and defense, but that doesn’t really paint a good picture. The Under is 4-1 in the Chargers’ last 5 home games, and I think it’ll stay Under this week too.

Game Total Prediction = Under 45.
