Army Navy Spread Betting Line and Predictions

Two of the oldest and most storied rivals in college football will meet this Saturday (2:30pm ET) when the Navy Midshipmen (8-3, 3-2 on road) take on the Army Black Knights (6-5 2-3 at home) in the 110th meeting between the two teams at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. Navy comes into this meeting riding a three-game winning streak, including a 35-19 victory over Arkansas St. in their last contest on November 20. Army has had a three-week layoff as well, losing to Notre Dame their last time out at Yankee Stadium by a score of 27-3. In the last meeting between the two teams, Navy defeated Army 17-3; the Midshipmen have won eight straight contests in the series.

Navy’s triple option attack is led by senior quarterback Ricky Dobbs who has thrown for over 1,100 yards with 110 touchdowns and 4 interceptions while averaging 3.6 yards per carry with 13 touchdowns on the ground as the triggerman for the offense. The Midshipmen rank 5th in the nation in rushing yards per game with 303.3 while averaging 31 points per contest. Navy is not a threat to put the ball in the air very often, with 111.5 YPG through the air. The defense allows an average of 22.8 PPG, good for 45th in the nation. Their Achilles heel has been in the secondary where they rank 81st in the country with 228.8 YPG allowed.

The Black Knights of Army also feature run-oriented option attack on offense led by sophomore quarterback Trent Steelman who has thrown for 837 yards and 5 touchdowns while running for 620 yards and 11 scores on the ground, the most on the team. Army ranks 8th in the country with 262.5 YPG rushing, but is even less of a threat to go to the air than their nautical counterparts with 77.9 YPG passing. The Black Knights put up 28.5 PPG, ranking in the top half of FBS teams at 52nd in the nation. On defense, Army has been stout this season ranking 25th in the country in both total YPG allowed with 322.6 and passing YPG allowed with 190.9 while allowing an average of 24.6 PPG.

Army is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games against fellow independents, and the Black Knights are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games when playing a team with a winning record. In head-to-head play, the favorite is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings and Navy is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings. The under is 9-3-1 in Army’s last 13 games on grass.

Army vs. Navy Betting Predictions:

Over/Under Prediction (Top Play) – Take the under here, the trend favors the under and with two very conservative offenses and the forecast for snow hitting the Northeast on Saturday, expect points to be at a premium. Neither team has been strong in the kicking game, with Army ranking 107th in the country in field goal percentage with 56.5% and Navy ranking 72nd with 72.7%, so expect some adventures on field goals and extra points in the bad weather which will hold scoring down as well. Army has a tough defense that can hold Navy’s offensive attack in check, and with both teams running similar offensive schemes; the defenses should both have a great deal of experience defending against the triple option.

PREDICTION (Top Play) – UNDER 53.5

Spread Prediction– Army has not defeated Navy head-to-head since 2001; this may be their best chance in several years to make it a competitive game with a defense that has been tough to move the ball on all season long. Wintry weather conditions on a natural surface field could slow both teams down considerably and give the edge to the stronger defensive team, which is Army. Look for the Black Knights to struggle to score points, but their defense will keep them in this contest until the end of the game and give them a solid chance to win outright.
